Varnada Lagna
हरे राम कृष्ण
Dear K. Lakshman, Namaskar.
Heres answering your query on the topic of Varṇada Lagna.
Varṇa means color, caste or the single syllable of a word or mantra. As a sound syllable it refers to the origin of our creation, namely sound itself of which the first sound was aum. Sound manifests in the Akaśa or ether element, followed by the creation of the Vāyu or air element, which again is followed by the Agni or fire element. At this stage light and therefore also color emanated. This then resulted in the creation of Jala or water which gave sustenance and finally Prthvi or earth which brought about the solid surfaces and therefore also food.
Da means to give but also refers to the upadeśa or advise given by Brahma to the three gana of Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa when they asked to know their birth purpose. Brahma answered da to all of them, of which the Manushya interpreted this as dāna meaning to give as a means to overcome their excess personal greed. The Deva interpreted this as dama meaning to suppress or tame as a means to suppress their excessive desire to entertain themselves. The Rakshasa interpreted this as dayā meaning sympathy, compassion or pity, as a means to overcome the mercilessness they expressed towards other beings.
There are two methods of calculating Varṇada Lagna. One is based on degrees and the other is based on signs. Both methods follow the same steps, but can reveal different results if the combined result of the Lagna and Hora Lagna exceeds 30 degrees.
The calculation of Varṇada Lagna is based on the Horā Lagna (sustenance/food) and the Lagna (self). The signs of the two, viz.: Horā Lagna and Lagna being odd or even will decide the method of counting.
• If either is in an odd sign then count from Aries regularly to the sign occupied by Lagna/ Horā Lagna. Example: If Horā Lagna is placed in Sagittarius then counting forward from Aries we get Sagittarius as being the ninth sign from Aries.
• If either is in an even sign then count from Pisces in reverse to the sign occupied by Lagna/ Horā Lagna. Example: If Horā Lagna is placed in Scorpio, then counting in reverse from Pisces to Scorpio we get Scorpio as being the fifth sign from Pisces.
The next step is adding the two results.
• If the two of Hora lagna and Lagna are both in signs of same oddity then merely adding the two gives the result. Example: for Lagna in Cancer (9th from Pisces) and Horā Lagna in Virgo (7th from Pisces), then since both are in even signs the addition of 9+7 gives the result of 16. Remove multiples of 12 to get the exact sign-number as 4.
• If the two of Horā lagna and Lagna are both in signs of different oddity then finding the different between the two gives the result. Example: for Lagna in Leo (5th from Aries) and Horā Lagna in Scorpio (5th from Pisces), then since both are in signs of different oddity the difference of 5-5 gives the result of 0 which is the equivalent of the number 12.
• Note that the final result will always be an even number.
This result is then counted from Aries in forward order if the Lagna is in an odd sign to attain the Varṇada Lagna. If the Lagna is in an even sign then counting the result from Pisces in reverse order gives the Varṇada Lagna. Example: For the result of 12 for Lagna in Cancer count to the twelfth sign in reverse from Pisces, i.e. Aries. This is applied to all the houses from Lagna and Horā Lagna to calculate the Varṇada of each house.
Note that the Varṇada lagna will always occupy a sign of different oddity than that of the Lagna. But, if you add or deduct the degrees of the Lagna and Horā Lagna to attain the Varṇada lagna, then this can change.
Upadeśa: The Varṇada Lagna is responsible for sustaining the Lagna as it gives food to the Lagna. The two work in pairs where the Lagna acts and the Varṇada sustains the acts of the Lagna. Therefore whichever oddity the Lagna has, the Varṇada Lagna has to be that of a different oddity working as a balance to the Lagna.
Interpretation
The Varṇada Lagna doesn’t show abilities or sources of income, instead it shows the color or mood you will occupy as a means to sustain yourself in society. There are four main Varṇa which are meant to uphold dharma. Therefore it is from dharma that one finds a purpose and performs karma, and the four main Varṇa are actually the four feet of the cow or Kāmadhenu which uphold the Veda.
karmaru varṇa sṛjanā hoici
karmara caḍā āna nahiṁ kicci|
- Sri Acyuta Dasa, varṇa saṁhitā
Translation: Varṇa has evolved from Karma and other than Karma nothing else exists.
The various Varṇa are indicated by the four types of signs, viz.: Fiery, Watery, Airy and Earthy signs. The Kshatriya belong to the Fiery signs. The Brahmins belong to the Watery signs. The Vaishya belong to the Earthy signs whilst the Shudra belong to the Airy signs. The Varṇa of the airy and earthy signs is sometimes reversed due to reasons of supply and demand caused by the two types of Varṇa, but for the purpose of using the Varṇada lagna we will use the list as given.
The planets also indicate Varṇa. Sun & Mars denote the Kshatriyas. Jupiter & Venus indicate the Brahmins. Moon & Mercury indicate the Vaishyas, whilst Saturn indicates the Shudras. The nodes go against the norms of soceity as well as the Varna.
Example: Sri Achyuta Dasa
Date: January 30, 1510
Time: 21:58:37
Time Zone: 5:43:20 (East of GMT)
Place: 85 E 50′ 00″, 20 N 30′ 00″
Cuttack, India
1. The Lagna is in Virgo - an even sign, hence counting from Pisces in reverse to Virgo we get the 7th sign.
2. The Horā Lagna is in Taurus another even sign, hence counting from Pisces in reverse to Taurus we get the 11th sign.
3. 7+11 is 18.
4. As Lagna was an even sign, we must reckon this result in reverse from Virgo. The 18th sign is equal to the 6th sign (18-12=6) hence the 6th sign in reverse from Pisces must be found. This is Libra, which is the position of the Varṇada Lagna.
Libra is a Shudra sign hence we may infer that Sri Achyuta Dasa was given Shudra -type work, i.e. service, physical labour, arranging amenities for worship, etc. He has stated in his works that whilst his grandfather was a Kshatriya, his father was occupying the Shudra caste as appointed by the Mahaganapati at the time. The lord of Varṇada lagna is Venus and is placed in a watery sign indicating that he would change to Brahmin-work, and would enjoy a lot of happiness from the exaltation of the same. Venus is unconjoined hence it alone will indicate the type of Brahmin work. Among Brahmins Venus indicates consultants and advisors, i.e. like astrologers, therapists, doctors, etc., whilst Jupiter indicates teachers, singers, actors, etc.
Hence Sri Achyuta Dasa would have been involved in a consultant related profession. He was a very renowned Jyotisha for the heads of Orissa.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

Dear Visti,
I have doubts.
My VL in Cp (28-02-1970 3:55 GT 48N 37E50),
but my father is a geologist, and the mother is an engineer .
Are a geologist and an engineer the Vaishya?
Thank You,
Constantin.

Dear Visti,
Namaskar, Regarding the change in type of work if the Varnada Lagna Lord is placed in a different type of sign then the Varnada Lagna, when does it actully happen, does it always happen ?
Also regarding the nodes, I have Ketu in VL so should indicate some out of norm job, however I am doing a very routine job, maybe we should look at the significations of the planet in other way also like Ketu can give computer related jobs so in that way it might be correct.
Also if the Lagna Lord and VL lord are same what should we infer, that the intelligence of the person will make sure that sustainence is there ?
If the VL lord is co-joined then should we make a guess of occupation from all of the planet or only the onse joined.
Like say in my case if VL lord is Venus in Scorpio with Sun and Rahu.
Best Regards,
Ashish

hello sir
i have my VL in 8th house in taurus(which is an earthy sign indicating vaishya and i belong to that caste) with no planets and its lord venus is present in aries with moon and rahu. so the lord of varnada lagna is in a fiery sign indicating kshatriya type work. my parents are doctors. so would i switch to a business type work(moon joining varnada lagna lord) against the norms (rahu) ? i think its all mixed here. rahu is exalted in gemini in navamsa while both venus and moon are debilitated.
thanks for your guidance

Dear Vistiji,
Namaskarams,
With regards to your above article on Varnada Lagna, I had come across a different dimension of information from one of Pandit Sanjay Raths’ classes where he had mentioned that in the Queen of Englands’ chart 2nd lord was placed in the 12th house and still she was the Queen ruling the major part of this earth and the reason he mentioned was because of the placement of the Varnada Lagna in the 2nd house. Could you please explain how this placement or any such placement of VL has effect on a person?
Warm Regards,
Prahalad.

Dear Visti,
Seems some spoon-feeding/?/ needed: what would placement of Varnada Lagna in sixth house with Ketu mean? And in 8th, and 12th house? In short, if VL placement in ANY dusthana h. is bad for sustenance of lagna? What Sanjay said
about VL placed in second- I have difficulty understanding and
‘marrying’ all principles related to VL. Like, if VL is with Rahu, would you say that some ‘antisocial’ ‘illegal’ etc.. work will be req’ed to sustain Lagna? And Ketu ’spiritual’, for that matter… I am wondering if the first is the case, and the person hasn’t done anything /antisocial/ in his life, would that make you re-think TOB, /new/ rectification?

Anna

Dear Members, Namaskar
Lakshman
No dreaming here, concentrate and read or you will ask me the same questions over and over again.
Constantin
It depends on what the Geologist and the Engineer are doing, as those titles are merely what they have learnt and not necessarily what they are doing. People who work with the earth and trade of the same are definitely Vaishya whereas blue-collar workers and labourers belong to the Shudra class.
Ashish
Another name given for Ketu is ‘jatyantara’ meaning one who works in between the other castes. This could be one who interacts and works with one class as well as another.
The Varnada Lord shows what you do after applying your intelligence. This normally happens after one has been educated in a specific line of work.
Now, as soon as we are looking at source of income we can no longer rely on the Varnada lagna itself. Instead we must see the 11th house from Varnada lagna and the lord of the same house. This reveals which type of varna-activity one is earning from and here you can specifically see the paycheck or its denial.
Do analyse this.
Prahalad and Anna
If you study the calculations carefully you will find that the Varnada lagna will always fall in either: 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th houses. It can only fall in these houses as these signs will be a different oddity than that of the Lagna. I’ve explained why in the writeup.
Now how does this change the chart? Look at it this way: If a chart shows that the native will see death in life then at first glance we may consider this inauspicious.
However, if the Varnada lagna placement shows that that death-combination is a source of regular work and income, then maybe the person is a hospice worker, criminal investigator, or other people who work with death. Therefore the experience has now become a source of livelihood as it has become the persons duty in soceity.
So lets see the chart of the Queen Victoria that Prahalad mentioned:
Victoria, Queen
Date: May 24, 1819
Time: 4:15:00 am
Time Zone: 0:00:40 (West of GMT)
Place: 0 W 10′ 00″, 51 N 30′ 00″
In the chart the second lord is in the twelfth house and can give many losses in income. It is joined the ascendant lord and can give a need for the person to devote their lives for other people (lagnesh in 12th). This can make the person quite miserable as Lagnesh is in the 12th from the Sun (karaka for lagna). To some help it shows alot of foreign involvement because of the twelfth house placement and the shankhya yoga formed by the conjunction of fifth and sixth lords showing new beginings.
Now, see that the Varnada Lagna is in the second house and therefore the lord of Varnada lagna (birth cause) is involved in this combination and this is placed in the eleventh from Varnada lagna (source of livelihood). So that entire yoga for loss of money, the selfless actions towards others and the foreign expansion is now the persons occupation in soceity. You may even call this auspicious as a result.
This should give you a clear picture and this way you should analyse the Varnada Lagna in your chart.
Rahu associated with the Varnada Lagna can make one a foreigner in any place you work, or make you belong to a foreign fraction of a countries demographic in matters of occupation. It can also bring about new and alternative types of occupation within a country.
Yours sincerely, Visti

‘Om Namo Narayanaya”
Respected Guruji,
Pranams and thank you very much for your kind clarification. In my case the Varnada Lagna being Libra, the Lord of varnada lagna is Lord Venus placed in Scorpio and it is the fifth house from my Lagna. As far as for the source of Income the 11th house from the Varnada Lagna is Leo with Lord Moon and Lord Ketu. In this case the varnada lagna has lord sun which is debiliated and also the 11th house ( leo ) whose lord sun is again debiliated.
How to interpret this situation. Kindly clarify Guruji.
