Grahana - Pata gocara (nodal transits)
Solar and Lunar eclipses occur every six months, with both eclipses ocurring within fifteen days of each other. These two close eclipses, their time of ocurrance and the rasi/nakshatra of the luminaries during both events, are most relevant for analysis.
The analysis of eclipses adds significant relevance to the use of nodes transit in the zodiac.
The solar eclipse can occur before or after the lunar eclipse, and as a result the effects of the eclipse also vary from auspicious to inauspicious. Or rather, the eclipse leads ones towards ‘bhoga’ and material benefit, or ‘moksha’ and purging/spiritual benefit.
The effect of the eclipse becomes relevant when occuring over the rasi or nakshatra of natal grahas in the persons chart. Herein the lagna is included as an important point of reference.
For the self, there are four important reference points:
1. Lagna and Moon.
2. Lagnesha and Sun.
Eclipses occurring within the same rasi as another graha will affect the fortune (bhagya) and direction (gati) of the person indicated by the graha, be it good or bad, whereas those occurring within the same nakshatra will affect the health of the individual indicated by the graha.
In judgment of results:
i) if the solar eclipse occurs first, then conjunction of lagnesha, Sun and other lordships benefit in contact with the eclipse, otherwise this is very negative.
ii) if the lunar eclipse occurs first, then conjunction of lagna, moon and other karakas benefit in contact with the eclipse, otherwise this causes duryoga and loss of raja yoga.
- The effects of the eclipse can precede the eclipse date or succeed the same. If the luminary is placed before lagnesha/surya/bhavesha, then the effects arise prior to the eclipse date. This is opposite for lagna/chandra/karaka. Otherwise it will be after. This is to be confirmed with dasas.
The effects of a significant eclipse last for 18 years until the next eclipse occurs in the same signs.
- Since Jupiter is the Guru, or guide and teacher which leads the person out of the darkness of an eclipse, the position of transit Jupiter shows the direction of major change occurring in the persons life. The form and name of the Guru is also indicated from this. If the eclipse affects the natives Lagna/Chandra or Karakas the persons Guru is Dattatreya (vaishnava form). If it affects the group of Lagnesha/Surya/Bhavesha the persons Guru is Dakshinamurti (shaiva form).
- Finally the eclipse lagna shows which events transpire which mark the persons life-change. The Lagna is reckoned from the solar eclipse. This is to be reckoned from the planetary placements in the natal chart.
+ First step is analyzing which signs and nakshatras the luminaries are placed in during the solar and lunar eclipse.
An example is given of LK Advani. The Solar and Lunar eclipse occurred in Svati and Asvini nakshatras, where the Solar eclipse preceded the Lunar. Jupiter was transiting Leo, whilst Lagna was placed in Virgo.
Advani, LK
Date: November 8, 1927
Time: 8:30:00 am
Time Zone: 4:28:00 (East of GMT)
Place: 67 E 03' 00", 24 N 52' 00"
Lunar Yr-Mo: Prabhava - Karthika
Tithi: Sukla Chaturdasi (Sk) (31.34% left)
Vedic Weekday: Tuesday (Ma)
Nakshatra: Aswini (Ke) (53.85% left)
Yoga: Siddhi (Ma) (39.50% left)
Karana: Vanija (Sk) (62.68% left)

The eclipse in April 19th 2004 occured in the nakshatras Asvini and later the lunar eclipse occurred in Svati. The solar eclipse occurred first.
Since the natal moon is in Asvini nakshatra, this eclipse causes downfall and rajbhanga yoga. Subsequently after the eclipse the BJP party to whom LK Advani belongs, fell from power.
+ The next step is analyzing the signs and houses in which the eclipse occurs.
In the chart of LK Advani, the eclipse occurs along the sixth and twelfth houses. This brings enmity and back stabbing, and this arose in the form of the opposition which formed a coalition to take over the governing power the same month.
+ The degree of the eclipse will reveal whether the results will arise before or after the eclipse.
In the chart of LK Advani, the Moon is at 6 degrees Aries. The solar eclipse occurred in 5 degrees Aries. In case of eclipses affecting the Lagna/Moon or karakas, the effects will be felt after the eclipse if the degrees are less than the graha. in this case the effects were felt after the eclipse where the BJP government fell in May 2004 for the elections.
+ Position of Jupiter shows the major direction taken by the individual after/before the eclipse.
Transit Jupiter is placed in the tenth house from the Lagna of LK Advani. Thus the major direction of change is that of the persons career and the Guru guiding the same is Dattatreya. One can expect a major change in career due to this eclipse.
+ The transit/eclipse Lagna shows the events which transpire to instigate the major direction indicated by the eclipse.
The Eclipse lagna occurs in Virgo, which will show the events which transpire. In LK Advani’s chart Virgo is the eleventh house joining the arudha lagna which is supposed to be auspicious for the native promising rise and opportunity. However, a debilitated Venus is joined the arudha and promises rajbhanga yoga or fall from grace.
US Presidential elections 2000
The presidential elections in 2000 marked an important turning point for previous Vice President Al Gore and current President George W Bush Jr.
The first eclipse of the year occurred in July 2000 along the signs of Capricorn and Cancer. The nakshatras were Pushya and U. Ashadha. The Lunar eclipse preceded the solar eclipse in this case, thus benefiting Lagna/Chandra and the karakas joined.
Gore, Al
Date: March 31, 1948
Time: 12:53:00 pm
Time Zone: 5:00:00 (West of GMT)
Place: 77 W 02' 00", 38 N 54' 00"
Lunar Yr-Mo: Sarva-jit - Phalguna
Tithi: Krishna Sapthami (Sa) (14.15% left)
Vedic Weekday: Wednesday (Bu)
Nakshatra: Moola (Ke) (24.25% left)
Yoga: Variyan (Gu) (15.76% left)
Karana: Bava (Sy) (28.30% left)
Cancer and Pushya happens to the be the lagna nakshatra of both George W. Bush Jr. and Al Gore, thus showing great benefit for both of the presidential candidates. During this time both candidates rose to attract enormous popularity in a very tight election. However, the second eclipse later in the year had no specific impact on Bush, but did have so on the chart of Gore. For sake of learning we will focus on the chart of Mr. Al Gore.

The second eclipse occurred at the end of the year 2000 votes on the 25th of December. This occurred in the signs of Gemini and Sagittarius in the nakshatras of Mula and Punarvasu. The solar eclipse occurred first, and thus will benefit the lagnesha/surya and lordships, but ruin the raja yoga of the Lagna/Moon and karakas. Al Gores’ natal Moon is placed in Mula nakshtatra showing that it was a time for destruction of wealth and raja yoga.
The eclipse occurred at exactly 10 degrees 22 minutes whereas Al Gores natal Moon is placed at 10 degrees 6 minutes… an exact conjunction occurred! However, as the eclipse had higher minutes than the natal moon, the event would have occured prior to the eclipse. On December 13th (12 days prior) Al Gore announced his loss of the 2000 presidential elections which was by a very narrow margin. The eclipse seems to work perfectly in the charts of politicians.
Just as in the case of LK Advani, the eclipse occurs along the sixth/twelfth house axis. Jupiter is transiting Taurus in the eleventh house joining arudha lagna, showing that the direction of name, fame, etc is under ‘new guidance’. After the elections Al Gore left politics and has currently made his way into the movie industry (Venus joined AL) with a movie regarding environmental issues (Taurus is the sustainer of the earth).
The Lagna will indicate the event and here the eclipse Lagna is Pisces. At first glance Pisces seems very auspicious as the Sun being placed in Pisces is a siddhi-da (giver of power) due to its lordship of Ghatika lagna and its mutual aspect with lagnesh. Its conjunction with the arudha of the fifth house also promises association with power and authority as the aspect on the Moon-Jupiter yoga is showering the effects of Lakshmi yoga and blessings of elders.
Now, there is only one reason for his fall which is of prime importance to the chart: Rahu is placed in the throne/tenth house, and as a result the house placement of the Sun will not rise to its full potential. It was due to the decision of the courts (ninth house) that he was denied the simhasana/throne and hence the presidentship.
These principles of Varachakra should be kept carefully in mind when analyzing the chart.

Dear Visti-ji,
Thank you for the very informative piece on how eclipses affect a chart, we will all surely benefit from this knowledge.
In Advani’s chart Budha and Shukra are in a Parivartana, so even though Shukra is debilitated doesn’t the Parivartana lift up Shukra and give the effect of exalted Budha in AL?
That the exchange is happening between the 11th and 12th houses is the indication of him losing power. Is this correct?

Namaste Visti,
Thanks for this article.
As all are well aware of, Rahu & Ketu remain in each degree of the zodiac for about three weeks.
Beside the effects of the nodal transits on various points in the chart, particularly lagna in this case, it is my experience, both personal and from other cases that Ketu transiting the exact lagna degree will bring upon the native three weeks of “error related actions/decisions”, which can result in either undesireable outcome or be resolved with minor ‘damage’.
This is in general terms, depending naturally on any specific chart as a whole.
In many cases Rahu’s transit conjunctions can generate material blessing for the mentioned time frame, depending on the planet/point in question.
The awareness of the effects of the nodes transits can be regarded as an advantage, eventually preventing unpleasant situations.
Best regard

Thanks for this Visti-well presented and articulated, issue which has been long overdue. Many things presented
here I have yet to test myse;f, others ‘guite on the spot’ as per my own experience- in general: analysis od potential
manifestations, replacing mystification so often filling the gap for understanding nodes’ transit.
Very important step indeed.
Thanks

Dear Amrta, Namaskar
How is Kali-fornia these days?
You have a good question which is missing from my analysis of the chart. First see from the Lagna - parivartana between a good house (11th) and a bad one (12th). So when the planet in the 11th gets activated we can expect to see him gaining wealth, support, etc. after coming out of a time of losses (12th). Venus is neecha there and will give great wealth.
But NOW see this from arudha lagna. There is a parivartana between two relatively good houses, however whilst Mercury in second is great and gives rulership of a town or village, Venus debilitated on the arudha lagna is horrible for the arudha and sustenance.
So we can infer that after a political slump he attained lots more votes than he usually does but this didn’t turn in his favor on the political scene.
For more on this do read my article on parivartana in the section named the same. Do leave a comment there as well if you’d like.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen
p.s. the site links have changed, so you may need to revise some links… i promise this won’t change for a long time.

Dear Sharat, Namaskar
The solar eclipse on march 19th is preceded by a lunar eclipse on the 3rd of March. This is what we need to know first. This means the solar eclipse is going to hurt Surya, house lordship and lagna lord during the eclipse and benefit Lagna, Chandra (also Arudhas) and the Karaka’s its joined.
The Sun and Moon will joined in Uttara Bhadra Nakshatra first pada at 4:12 Pisces.
Any thing joined this degree will give problems.
If your Lagna, Moon, Arudhas or a Karaka is before this degree but in the same nakshatra, expect that any old issues are ending or have been getting resolved over the last six months. If this is the opposite then expect the coming six months to show a lot of changes and the next 18 years to be colored by these.
If your Lagnesha, Sun or other lordships are before this degree, expect the next six months to be full of the changes highlighted by the eclipse. If otherwise then see this as a culmination of the last few months of change coming your way.
Now, based on this Good/Bad change see the direction in which this change will happen based on the placement of Jupiter. Since Jupiter is in Scorpio see which house Scorpio is in your chart. I.e. in my chart its in lagna so the change is in my personality, ideals, views, principles, etc.
The lagna of the eclipse must then be seen based on the persons birthplace. I was born in Kenya and the eclipse lagna will fall in Meena this time, hence i can expect that events pertaining to my students, children, followers, etc. will be the focus.
For those of you in India, for the most the eclipse lagna will be Aries/Mesha for you. So see which houses/lordships are associated with mesha in your charts to see which events carry the important focus.
With that you should be set.
Hope this helps.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

Dear Jay and Anna, Namaskar
Thanks for your well wishes and response to the article. Yes there is indeed a lot of things that we need to dwell on regarding these nodes and big and heavy books like Brhat Samhita require a lot of our attention to properly understand them. I have tried to boil down the principles of my Guruji Sanjays teachings to the absolute importance and given them with examples. I hope people will benefit from this and increase their research into this area of study.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

Pranaam Visti ji,
Thanks for the wonderful article. It clarifies a lot of questions I have.
A few more questions.
1. If an eclipse is occuring on the lagna and is good for the lagna (Lunar eclipse precedes solar eclipse), then is it good for the planets conjunct the lagna as well.
2. Would the effects be different if the planets are malefic or benefic. Example: Sa conjunct lagna and jupiter conjunct lagna.
Thank you once again so such a clear and concise article.

Dear Supriti, Namaskar
You don’t need to thank me, this is my karma. Still I’m glad you liked it.
1. Not necessarily. It will hurt the lordships but benefit the karakas. We need to judge accordingly.
2. Nope, we are mainly concerned with the type of direction the eclipse will carry us in. The good/bad is based on the nature of the solar eclipse being preceded or succeeded by the lunar eclipse.
Hope this helps.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

Dear Visti,
Namaskar,
Regarding eclipse time in India, I get the following:
Eclipse start time in UT/GMT is 00:38:26; hence in India will be 06:08:26. This gives eclipse in Meena lagna in Uttara bhadra at 4:04, it will change to Mesha only after 2 hours when the eclipse will be at its peak.
My Q are:
1.So do we take Meena lagna for those born in India as that is the lagan at start of eclipse?
2. If the natal luminaries are not in the nakshatra of eclipse , will they still get effected, even if they are nowhere near the degrees of the eclipse?
3. Will other planets within one degree of eclipse get effected, no matter where they are placed in the natal chart? If so how will we judge the effect on them ?
4. Will another planet in the same nakshatra of the eclispe get effected, and effect the health in its direction?
4. Do the transit ‘ nodes’ play any part in this?
5. Can we also use the vargas relevant to the eclipse axis to judge the effect? Like if it is 1-7 axis, will navamsa also reflect the changing events?
Thanks for your patience

Namakar Visti,
I am a huge fan of all the material and taped lectures that you present and have learnt of vedic astrology from you. Thank you for that. Now to some of my questions. I notice that in all your examples you only looked at the solar eclipse and the location of the luminaries in the solar eclipse.
1) Do you look at the location and nakshatras of the luminaries in the lunar eclipse? and judge the lagna in the same way?
2) If you do look at the luminaries, does it also count that the sun (in the lunar eclipse) is in the same nakshatra as the natal sun?
3) Finally, if #2 applies, then does the timing also work the same way as you described above?
Thank you again for all your information and advice. You are much appreciated for sharing your knowledge, throughout the world.

Srikanta

Dear Sharat, Namaskar.
Answer to your questions. Good thinking.
1. We use the MAXIMUM eclipse point for the Lagna. Jhora gives this reliably.
2. No, they cannot be affected unless associated with the eclipse.
3. Yes they will. Even Arudhas. However, just as the Sun, Moon and Lagna are YOU, the other planets are the people you know, i.e. Mars or third lord is brother, whilst Jupiter or fifth lord is child. But, its not really personal unless it affects either of the sun, moon or lagna.
4. This is HOW we judge the effects of the transit nodes ;).. Now imagine how we can judge the transits of other planets.
5. You must of course judge the chart before looking for events to happen… Otherwise we are back to day-one of Jyotish analysis and we look at the dasa in anticipation of an event but completely forget to look at the chart itself. So yes, depending on which combinations are there in the chart and in which direction the eclipse is taking one, the relevant divisional charts need to be seen. In the charts of Al Gore and George Bush Jr, their Dasamsa charts become of utmost importance.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

Dear Srikanta, Namaskar
I’m glad you appreciate the website.
o Yes the solar eclipse is the FOCUS of the eclipse as this eclipse is really the REAL eclipse of the soul which has seized the self and dragged it through a serious of births and rebirths. Thats why. Hence we worship the remover of the eclipse - Dakshinamurti Shiva to overcome this and remember why we have been dragged through all this.
o The Lunar eclipse is relevant especially for humanity, but this is a separate topic all together.
o Yes we check Sun, Moon, Lagna and Lagnesha. These are relevant during the eclipse, and we time accordingly.
Hope this helps.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

Dear Anna, Namaskar
This is an EASY way for me to teach, and an EASIER way for me to keep the teachings in one place. I’m using this forum as a means to avoid the problem of getting the same questions repeated 3 months after it was asked.. the email forums just aren’t ‘easy’ enough for people to learn from and i end up spending 5 times as much energy as usual. Hence, i have over the last few months been collecting subjects and mails which i felt would be worth elaborating on, and started publishing them on this forum. When one topic has been discussed and the activity has died down on the same, I publish a new topic with charts and elaborations which can be appreciated by both learners and teachers alike.
I’m glad you enjoy the forum, do ask if you like, you are certainly free to do so.
Yours sincerely, Visti.

Dear Visti ji,
I have been trying to learn this concept for a few years now. You have provided a lot of information, I will try to put it togetherbased on my chart. Please correct my limited understanding and answer my queries.
I have Mo & Sa in Aries (2nd house), Lagna in UBha and Rh in Aquarius so this eclipse is very crucial for me.
1. First of all, from the sequence we can say that the eclipse will be good for my Mo and Lagna but bad for Sun and Lagnesh. In other words, the eclipse will be good for 5th house matters (Mo), mother and my direction in life, but bad for Jupiterian matters (husband perhaps) and Sun (father and 6th lord)
2. Mo(PK), Sa(AK), A11 and 2nd house will signify the change in direction in life. Since all these karakas are involved can we say that there will be a dramatic change in direction in societal, wealth and personality matters.
3. Ju is in Scorpio, my 9th house. So the change will be ignited by religion, higher knowledge, principles, father figures, etc.
4.What can we say about Rh in Aq?
5.Also, what is the impact of having a planet in UBha/Pisces versus a planet in the eclipse Lagna.
Thank you
Regards
Supriti

Dear Mr Visti,
I went through your post on Solar/Lunar Eclipses and their effects. What Scripts are the References? As none have been mentioned by you. Further I went through most of the Scripts like BPHS, Varahmihira, Saravali, Brihat Jaataka, Daivagya Vallabha, Sarvaartha Chintamani etc to mention a few, but I did not find the eccliptical effects anywhere AS mentioned by you. May be I do not know the scripts which you Refered to, in which case I want to know them, so that I can go through them.

Dear Guru ji,
Namaskar.
After reading Guru Ji’s article Grahana Pata gocara. i worked out the time of lunar eclipse for my place by using Lunar eclipse computer (US Navel Observatory program) and found that totality (exact conjunction i think) occurs at 4:13:8 (IST).on 4March 2007.
Then i tried to find the exact conjunction time with the help of JHora for 78E7 and 9N56 east of GMT (sea level 120 meters) on march 4, 2007. Through JHora i got the following results
Moon: 22Le24:53:57 PPhal 3 pada
Ketu: 22Le24:53:65 PPal 3 pada
This conjunction occurs at the time 11:31:39. Hence i here with request Guru Ji to kindly permit me to know the mistake committed by me in calculating the exact conjunction time.
With respects.

Dear Supriti, Namaskar
Since the eclipse is only on your Lagna, we cannot say it will affect Moon and other positions in your chart. Specifically it shows that you will see a change of lifestyle, ideals and attitude for the better/worse. The eclipse is for the better as the lunar eclipse preceded the solar and is affecting the lagna in this case. Only pay attention to the eclipsed positions in the chart.
I guess you were born in India and thus the eclipse lagna will be Aries and shows that from the eclipse you will see blessings in the form of family, wealth, etc as this is your second house. The planets in Aries show which events have been transpiring to date and shaping the events which will unfold in your favor.
Planets in Uttara Bhadrapada will suffer in their lordships (Rahu lords the 12th from Pisces) and gain as far as Karakatva is concerned (Rahu is foreign travel, increased association with foreigners).
The Guru directing this eclipse is Dattatreya or Vyasa (Vaishnava from of Guru). Jupiter is in the ninth house and shows dharma, guru, etc. as you have mentioned… Ninth house is also important for marriage.
I hope this helps in the understanding.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

Dear Dusi, Namaskar
The source of this are the Samhitas. The most popular these days being Brhat Samhita by Varahamihira. However, there is also mention of a Parasara Samhita, Kashyapa Samhita, etc. which are said to have these details and are qouted by Ramakrishna Bhatt in his translation of Brhat Samhita.
Pt. Sanjay Rath has given the initial direction in this regard, and hence i have also referred to his articles on his website in the end of the article. From this i have tried to give an approach focussed primarily on the natal chart based on his teachings.
I hope this helps.
Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

A person born during and eclipse, is it good or bad. if in a d-chart appears sun with moon and rahu in a bhava, can I read it as if an eclipse in that d-chart is happening?

hi virsti,
I researched in my chart these two last eclipses, which took place in feb 2008, the first one being a solar eclipse in capricorn and the second one, a lunar eclipse in leo. from what I observed, I question you>
a ) My sun is in 13º capricorn, 5th house from rasi. I indeed had a health problem, one month after the eclipse. Financially I had problems also. one month prior to this eclipse my bag was robbed. So, I had two problems that ocurred before and after the eclipse, how it can be possible ? moreover, a priest made an offer to Ganesh, on my behalf, prior to the lunar eclipse, but things haven´t improved much. a bit , but not much.
As the 5th house means power, luck, one can say that my luck was swept away ? If so, I´m concerned about the next solar eclipse, in january 2009, in capricorn.
b ) the lunar eclipse in leo activated my 12th house. the next day to this eclipse I fall down and hurted my knees, but it wasn´t severe. two weeks later I lost a contest to a job. Could I ´ve been object of black magic or it was bad kharma ?
c ) my birthdate is 27/01/1976, 21:30, rio de janeiro. brazil. I wonder if the eclipses last 6 months, not 18 years, because I see that the effects are immediately but somehow not permanent. for example, in 2001 , the solar eclipse in moola affected me financially for worse, but in 2005 things improved, so the eclipse doesn´t last 18 years.
d ) I think there is a strong correlation between huge earthquakes and solar eclipse. I think that the proxy solar eclipse of august 2008, China may have some huge problems, as the eclipse sign is cancer. what do you think ?
thanks…

Namaskaar Visti Ji,
I have a simple question - When we make the Eclipse chart, which time do we take into consideration? The start of eclipse, the peak, or the end?
May Sri Vishnu bless us all,
Reema.

Namaskaar Visti Ji,
Never mind my question above. I found out that JHora has an option to create eclipse charts, and it uses the peak time by default. So I assume it is the parampara stand.
