Retrogression (vakra)

Dear Ramesh, Namaskar
This is aiming towards a more advanced understanding of retrogression. Consider this he NEXT level of understanding of the topic.

When we go deeper into retrogression we can no longer settle with simply recognizing two motions of planets, namely Direct vs. Retrograde, but must now consider THREE motions namely:
Direct - Chara (rajasic state)
Stationary - dvisvabhava (sattvic state)
Retrograde - sthira (tamasic state)

Here we are taught in the tradition that the stationary position is a state of recharging, where the nature of the planets will indicate whether they are 1) meditating (sattvic grahas); 2) scheming (rajasic grahas); 3) sleeping (tamasic grahas).

Naturally not all the planets can achieve these three states, and hence we are talking of five grahas namely:
Sattvic: Jupiter.
Rajasic: Mercury and Venus.
Tamasic: Saturn and Mars.

Here the initial direct motion of the grahas shows them moving towards achieving their desires, and when they gradually slow down towards stationary they begin to loose their energy and whichever yogas associated with them, until they become completely helpless/inactive when in stationary itself.
Having come out of the stationary position and begin their retrogression they are all eager to achieve their desires with new found strength, however, the tamasic grahas coming out of their slumber can be utterly destructive and can completely devastate their house position due to the intense anger/sorrow they have suffered from loosing their abilities during their stationary position.
As a result the worst placement for tamasic grahas during their retrogression is i) their own sign and ii) exaltation.
Hence, such a position of a tamasic graha should not be in kendra or trikona as they will devastate their signs position.

So we can infer: a retrograde malefic/tamasic graha is like a curse when in own sign/exaltation and in the beneficial houses i.e. kendra and trikona, as it completely devastates these houses. Whereas his placement in dusthana when in own sign/exaltation will act like a vipareet raja yoga and destroy enemies.
Opposite will happen in his debilitation sign.

Example 1: Sri Rama (Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn in exaltation; Moon and Lagna in Cancer; Mercury in Taurus; Rahu and Ketu in Sagittarius and Gemini respectively)

In the chart of Sri Rama Saturn is opposite the Sun and must thus be retrograde. Saturn is in his exaltation sign in a kendra which is a very negative position and will devastate the fourth house indications. When the Moola dasa of Saturn began Sri Rama was exiled from his home (fourth house) due to the actions of a step mother (fourth house - saturn).

Example 2: Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa
Date: February 18, 1836
Time: 6:23:27
Time Zone: 5:50:56 (East of GMT)
Place: 87 E 44′ 00″, 22 N 53′ 00″

Aquarius is the Lagna and three planets viz. Saturn, Jupiter and Mercury are retrograde. Among these Saturn is retrograde in the ninth house in exaltation. Whilst Saturn and Jupiter both associated wit the ninth house indicating blessings after joining a spiritual lineage, the position of Saturn being retro and exalted brings a negative influence on the ninth house.
The effects of poverty, hunger, etc. and all the amenities of the lifestyle of an ascetic are indicated. However, Saturn is the lagna lord and indicates that HE chose this lifestyle, and thus a real tapasvi is born from this yoga.

Now, a benefic planet be it sattvic or rajasic will carry somewhat different characteristics. The sattvic Jupiter is like a sage coming out of meditation and is eager to bless the world with mantras, knowledge, etc. As a result he is in a very giving mood and if he is placed in his sign of debilitation there is NO GIVING as he has nothing to give. Yes, he is aiming towards exaltation as that is his desire, but how much of this can he give?
Similarly the rajasic planets are aiming towards growth and prosperity, but without money (debilitation) how will they grow?

Hence when a BENEFIC is retrograde, then his placement in debilitation is ONLY auspicious when in Dusthana. Otherwise in kendra or trikona he will act like a curse.
Opposite will happen in the exaltation sign.

Example 3: Insanity Case - VRA
Date: August 10, 1949
Time: 9:01:12
Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)
Place: 85 E 50′ 00″, 20 N 30′ 00″

The lagna is Virgo and Jupiter is retrograde in the chart. Jupiter is placed in the fifth house in debilitation thus indicating a terrible durbhagya from past life. This is substantiated by Jupiter being afflicted by Sun and Mars (fire/burning), as Jupiters vargottama placement indicates that it will affect the first house adversely where health, intelligence will suffer as a result.
This happens in the fifth house of mantra and bhakti and can show wrong mantras/thoughts guiding the native and leading towards the problem. This is especially so with Jupiter being badhakesh placed here as a severe pisacha badhak and sarpa dosha exists in the chart.

The native dabbled in black magic and some of the darker tantric practices, which resulted in him loosing his mental balance after an accident involving the burning down of a building, he developed scizophrenia.

Now, there is more to consider here such as the INTENSITY of the retrogression, as a planet who is ending his retrogression has his desires fulfilled and will not be as destructive, whilst one who has just begun is full of energy and desires. I will leave this aspect of the discussion to a future publication.

Yours sincerely,

Visti Larsen

How can one tell when a planet is stationary, and also the intensity of its retrogression? Does Jagannatha Hora software have this feature?

  2. vikas Says:

a planet would be stationary just before becoming retro or direct, sun and moon are always direct, mercury is stationary for 3 days, saturn for usually 20 days and jupiter 10 days when changing from direct to retrograde or viceversa.
we have to look at pachang for exact figures.
looking forward to GuruVsti for corrections and more guidance in this matter.

    Dear Visti,

Thanks for the above explanation on Vakra, very informative.

I have two queries, please advise:

    1. The natal chart reveals what a native is born with.
Thus we can know if the planet is direct or vakri and deduce its effect.
Does the transit motion of that planet( esp JU/SA) also be considered at that time or the study of that transit is considered separately?

2.I give two examples to clarify the vakri effect:

A.You gave Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’s example, I quote a similar one:
Taurus lagna, with Sa and Ju, both retrograde, both in 9th H, thus Sa is in its own sign and Ju is debilitated.
Both when considered separately are malefic( Sa R, in its own sign and in Trikona; Ju R and Debil in Trikona).
However will Jupiter give neecha bhanga raj yoga here, esp if Sa is strenghtened by blue sapphire in Sat MD?

B.Me retro in its own sign of gemini; will give beneficial effects or bad effect in a neutral house like 2H?
Will its association with Sun make it malefic?

Thanks as always for your guidance.

    Regards

    Sharat

    Namaste,

What about Jupiter retro in kendra 7cn05, komala Shashtyamsa?

The debility position in navamsa will affect his meanings?

    Thanks

  5. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Michal, Namaskar.
As Vikas has stated, stationary motion occurs BETWEEN the direct and retrograde motions.
You can read some more about the motion here: http://www.lasalle.edu/~smithsc/Astronomy/retrograd.html
Keep in mind that when the planet goes retrograde the SECOND time, i.e. when moving out of retrogression and into direct motion, this state is the state of ‘fulfillment of desires’. As a result they deem the nature of the planet AFTER retrogression as being very inauspicious. Of course this depends on the nature of the planet, i.e. Saturn after retrogression is EXTREMELY benign as is Mars as they have completely lost their sorrow and anger.
However, Jupiter has very little to give in this state… So theres much more to ‘motions’ than just retrogression.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen
  6. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Sharat, Namaskar.
    1. Transit during the time of birth constitutes the birthchart and the motions of the planet during birth are indeed taken very much into account, especially when you read the chapter on strengths in BPHS. If you are referring to the transit motions AFTER birth, then yes its very important to know if a planet gets retrograde or stationary.
Do this: Find in the sky when a person goes stationary before retrogression. Find the navamsa-sign in which the planet does this. See this sign in your natal chart to know the effects.
Example: A person with Leo Lagna had Jupiter in fifth house - sagittarius. The problem in the particular chart was that Jupiter was removing a curse in the natal chart and thus the blessings of Jupiter were vital for the person.
When Saturn turned retrograde in Cancer Rasi - Sagittarius navamsa the person was suddenly blocked in their professional pursuits due to government action and had a tough time for the following period.
So motions are vital in timing events.
But this ascribes to only five planets, for the remaining four (viz. sun, moon and the two nodes). For the remaining we have eclipses ;-).

    2. a. Neecha bhanga yoga only happens in kendra to lagna or moon. Only from lagna can we use gemstones, whilst from moon we need mantras.
Assume this was Aries lagna then. Then yes the wearing of a blue sapphire would have the purpose of taking Jupiter out of debility, but this should be worn on the left hand to ensure that the dur-bhagya of Shani doesn’t affect the the ninth lordship negatively.

    2. b. Mercury does bad things in bad company, but he isn’t a malefic. I.e. Mercury joined Rahu can show kids experimenting with drugs or the likes in their school because of their ‘association’. But the kid is good and can do good. Now, if Mercury is retrograde in his own sign, then because he is a benefic by nature he can do extremely good if in kendra or trikona, in the sense that he will be OVER giving towards others. A great teacher of yoga is born from this. However, if this same Mercury is joined or opposite malefics (aspect) then when influenced by his ‘friends’ he can be three times as worse than he normally is…ouch.
Sun is not a malefic for dharma, but such a person can be very cruel with his/her words.

I have a friend with Jupiter retrograde in a kendra. He studies Jyotish and does his UTMOST for his clients. He would give them an unusual amount of remedies and end up paying for their pujas, to the extent that it started depleting his bank account severely… A big giver, but left with little to feed his own family - this is why retrogression denies the mahapurusha yoga.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

    Dear Andrew, Namaskar.
See my previous answer to Sharat reg. the Retrograde Hamsa Mahapurusha yoga. I can’t comment on the komala shastyamsa without knowing 1) the rasi lagna and 2) the shastyamsa lagna.

Yes, the navamsa shows the BHAGYA, or earned grace from God. The grace of God can reverse everything.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  8. Hari M Says:

    Dear Visti, namaste

This is a very good mail on retrogression and does shed a lot of light on this issue, seeing that this is from the parampara. Thanks and keep up the good work.

I have two doubts concerning my natal chart; one doubt arising from the principles you gave in the mail on retrogression.

I have Sani vakra in the Jaya bhava from Vrischika lagna. I remember that you showed in an earlier mail with a few examples how Sani in the 7th house cannot be attributed as the sole cause for delay in marriage as is the popular notion. So I have been pondering on what is the exact cause for delay in marriage.

    1. In my natal chart, Sani had just began its retrogression about 10 days before I was born. Being in a kendra but in Vrishabha rasi, can I infer that it is extremely sorrowful and therefore a prime cause for delay in marriage?

    2. You mention own sign/exaltation as a supporting condition. In my chart, Sani is vakra in a kendra but in friendly rasi. Does it mean that the sorrow is somewhat mitigated?

    3. Assuming that retrogression is the primary cause for delay in my case, could this delay be further confirmed by noting that the lord of the rasi (Shukra) is debilitated and also that Sani is in debilitation navamsa? It is interesting to note that the navamsa dispositor of 7th lord is again Sani!

My maternal grandfather just before his death had asked his son to go to my kuladevata temple priest with my horoscope and consult him as to whether any remedies could be done. The priest, who knew my paternal lineage, was spot on in his assessment of the chart said that no remedy was required as ‘they have already been done’; the problem would be resolved when Sani turns direct in transit around April’07 and that the spouse would not be well educated, from a poor family and generally of inferior status when compared to mine. I am intrigued by this last comment since I see that in my chart, the UL lord (Surya) is conjoined an exalted Mercury (Buddha-Aditya yoga - well educated) and debilitated Venus (very wealthy family per Jaimini). Of course there could be a doubt about the upapada since I got engaged and disengaged last year but what do you feel about the priest’s opinion?

Sorry for such a lengthy mail and best regards
    Hari

  9. Sharat Says:

    Hare Ram Krishna

    Dear Visti,
Namaskar, thanks for above, very informative as always.
In the example I gave for Neecha Bhanga of Jup; it is in Taurus lagna; Sa and Ju both Vakri in Capricorn, Moon in Virgo is in trine to Ju/Sa.(23/06/61;3:58am,Lucknow,India).
Here Blue Sapphire was worn on right hand just before start of Sa MD and ever since has produced an ongoing career rise and taken the lady to the top of her career..isnt that because of Jup Neecha Bhanga? No mantras were used but the person has Ganesh bhakti.

Also with Sat now in sade sati, will the fortunes get effected now?

    Please enlighten.

    Thanks and regards
    Sharat

  10. vinita Says:

    Dear Vistiji,

    Namaskar,

If i recall from one of the lessons, VRY becomes effective if two lords of dusthanas or upachaya houses are conjoined and weak in a dusthsthana. Will Saturn in retrogression alone in 6th house for Taurus Lagna constitute a VRY or a rajya yoga? If so, why? Similarly, for the same lagna if a retro mars is in the 8th House (with Rahu), will it again indicate VRY? In both these cases the condition of two lords of dusthanas conjoined in a dusthana is not met. What would be the impact of a retro Mars on longevity during its MD?

    Best regards,
    vinita

  11. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Hari, Namaskar.
Did you notice Saturns debilitation in navamsa? Keep that in mind with the retrogression principle and that of your partners status after marriage. Lord of UL is joined neecha Saturn you see.
Saturn on the other hand can show great results after marriage due to his retrogression.

As for your delay in marriage - why ignore the curse of both venus, seventh lord and seventh house?
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.
p.s. If a neecha planet indicates source of wealth, it can be a lot, but if it indicates status, then its very poor.

  12. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Sharat, Namaskar.
Jupiter is getting a temporary neecha bhanga which will last for the tenure of Saturn dasa. I.e. During Saturn dasa, she will MEET those people who can give her Neecha Bhanga.
Jupiter is lord of the arudha lagna, hence the neecha bhanga is welcomed.
What happened during the persons 28th and 35th year? Any significant event?
Check Sade Sathi in Navamsa and Dasamsa in particular. I firmly believe that Sade Sathi in Rasi is more important for health.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen
  13. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Vinita, Namaskar.
Not just any upachaya lord. It must be a dusthana lord and/or 3rd lord.

Saturn exalted in sixth house shows a great and formidable enemy. The retrogression shows that on the verge of ‘battle’ this great enemy will run away screaming! This is no doubt a great VRY. But, if badly placed from Arudha lagna, this can be of no use to the native.

The conjunction between tenth lord Rahu and twelfth/seventh lord Mars in the eighth house is not a vipareet raja yoga, but a duryoga which is very inauspicious unless either Saturn of Venus has yoga with these planets… which is not the case. The retrogression here can cause unnatural death provided it also influences the 3rd/8th from arudha lagna. Otherwise it can cause severe fever-diseases. Usually this happens in the 8th or 20th year of the native.
The dasa should be estimated keeping in mind the above.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

    Dear Visti, namaste

Thanks for your reply and comments. Well to be honest, so far you are the only person who pointed out the curse of Venus & 7th house in my chart. Most of the persons, including Sanjay, have been silent on this point but it does make sense given that I am running Venus moola dasa and the disengagement happened during Venus-Rahu-Sun, the two planets involved in the curse.

Interesting to note that the two planets participating in the curse on Venus are both exalted in navamsa. The curse is no doubt a supporting factor but I think Sani vakra is mostly responsible for the delay in marriage.

Your point about neecha Sani joined rasi UL lord in navamsa is interesting.

  16. Naresh Says:

    Namaste Visti ji,

    I question on Retrogression.
Debilitated planet when retro gives results as if exalted, what if when a debilitated planet cojoins a retrograde planet? Since, conjunctions dominate unless the principal planet is strong, does this mean the debilitated planets has a support of another planet (retro) in trying bringing it out of debilitation?

    Thanks and regards,

    Naresh

  17. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
Dear Hari, Naresh and Dheena, Namaskar.

    Hari
Structure, predominance, and imposed importance of certain yogas… Without these Jyotish will look confusing.
If a person has a Kala Sarpa/Amrita yoga or Grahamalika Yoga, then it doesn’t matter how many planets are exalted or how many rajayogas are there, as the life is simply held back/delayed.
Curses also hold this prime level of importance, and can cause sickness, disease, etc. thus making one unable to perform the necessary to attain ones hopes and desires.
Even Rama could not avoid his curse which in a series of events simple denied him of his throne! Then who are we to talk? Imagine an astrologer analyzing Rama’s vimshottari dasa and seeing an exalted planets dasa come up and predicting that he would get some great rajayoga during his period of exile? Its a separate issue that he got the rajayoga AFTER the period of exile.

Your problem is the curse. There is no doubt at all in my mind about this. Saturn is just showing some partial effects of the curse, namely the delay of marriage, whilst the curse itself has a higher agenda in this regard.

    Dheenadayalan
I have described this in one of the past mp3s. See this: http://www.srigaruda.com/2006/09/10/rasa-and-neecha-bhanga/
The temporary neecha bhanga happens during the dasas of planets causing it, or narayana dasas (small tidbit secret) of signs in kendra to the planets i) lording exaltation/debilitation signs of the debilitated planet ii) the planet which gets exalted in the debilitation sign.
This becomes clearer after listening to the mp3-class on the same.

    Naresh
I’ve never heard nor seen that the motion of a planet (retrogression/stationary,etc) can change the avasthas of
conjoining planets. One may imply that if a planet is joined angry Mars, that the consolidated effect is MORE anger showered on the conjoining planet…
Conjunction dominates even incase the other planet is stronger.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

I agree with what you told about the imposed importance of certain yogas. I also approach a chart analysis in the same way. I remember you advised kamalatmika worship for correction of this problem but Sanjay told me not to dabble in mahavidya worship for now.

According to you, what is the higher agenda of the curse in my chart? Is it to drive me to search for answers to my questions in life?

I also notice that the curse of Venus repeats itself in navamsa, where the afflicting malefics are Sani and Rahu. It forms a tapasvi yoga in navamsa also and being connected to the istadevata, it does promise some spiritual progress in Guru mahadasa.

    Dear Visti, Namaskar,
Thanks for your advise regarding the retro effect and neech bhanga concept. In the example I gave, the native got a career break at 30 yrs and this has been on the up ever since and has led to her being the head of an institution. I did read somewhere that Sa-Ju conjunction can give that.
Regarding Sadhe Sati, Sanjay ji also mentions something similar, thus it should be checked in Navamsa for Bhagya, Dasamsa for career and in Rasi for health? Is that correct?
What aBout Sat transit from AL?

    Thanks and regards,
    Sharat

  20. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Hari and Sharat, Namaskar.

    Hari
Kamalatmika worship is not an unacceptable solution as your Venus is debilitated and involved in a curse. In fact its probably the best solution and is a remedy you should aspire for. However, its also not an easy path to take, and can bring out a lot of sensitive issues. For this reason most people, like myself, will only recommend Mahavidya worship but rarely give the mantra and sadhana without careful personal consideration reg. the person receiving the mantra.

The other solution is to worship the Karaka of the eleventh house - Guru, who is well placed in the lagna and can be worshiped as Sambasadashiva according to Parasara and Jaimini.
The malefics will tell us where the sorrow must be seen, and here we have Rahu and Sun involved. Rahu is the worst among the two and lords the fourth house showing that sorrow will come to home, mother, and personal happiness.

    Sharat
Ever heard of arudha lagna in vargas? We have two options for this - either using the degree of AL in rasi, or using the *new* AL calculated in the specific varga… I believe i asked my student Nitin Khanna to write an article about this… looking forward to his work. Heay Nitin! you there?!

    Dear Vistiji,
I am ardent student of your astrological mp3 posts. Based on your last sessions on Retrogade and Mahapurusha Yoga I have a question related to my chart. I have dhanush lagna with Jupiter exalted in Aquarius (one of your notes suggest that it gives results akin to Cancer) and having graha drishti on Gemini which consists of Sun(9), Mer (R)(7&10) and Sat(2&3). Data as per JHora suggests that Mer is combust. During the Mer antardasa in Ve dasa (6th house), I had such fantastic life just like Maharajyoga. I prospered tremendously in life, career and made huge properties. From Sanjayji’s class I learnt that I have complete Bhadra Mahapurusha Yoga as the Moon’s Nakhshatra lord is Mer alongwith being the rasi dispositor of Sun. My question, is does the Retro and combustion of Mer affect the Bhadra Yoga? Thanks.

  24. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण
    Dear Prahalad, Namaskar
Do notice that the combustion of Mercury is excellent in the position you mentioned. Your Mercury is in own sign in the THIRD from Arudha Lagna… always see arudha lagna. In usual cases this should give Pravrajya yoga and little wealth/fame. Its combustion would then cause the opposite in this case. I will not justify the retrogression causing this in this case without looking at navamsa, but the combustion plays an important role here as it breaks Pravrajya yoga (Parasara).
The next Jyotish Digest will have an article about combustion. I do recommend that you go through it when you have the chance. Hope this helps.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

    Namaste Vistiji,

Your lucent explanation of these advanced concepts of Vedic astrology is unmatched!

Can you kindly explain how to find out in Jagannath Hora whether, in a natal chart, a planet is stationary retrograde (about to enter retrogression) or stationary direct (just out of retrogression)? Jagannath Hora gives speeds of planets in AU/day units (under “Latitudes, speeds, etc (co-ordinates)” feature). How can we use this data to determine the motion of a planet?

P.s. I tried to google this but could not come across any thing to further my understanding.

May Sri Vishnu bless us all,

  26. Visti Larsen Says:

The speeds seem to be the key. Negative results mean the planet is retrograde, whilst a lack of speed means it is stationary.

  27. Prahalad Says:

    Dear Vistiji,
    Thanks for your quick response.
Sorry for not providing the birthdetails earlier.
    Its 2nd July 1974. 19:22 hrs. 76.56E and 15.9N. (Bellary) India.
    In the Navamsa,
Mercury is with Shani, Rahu and Moon (AK) in the Fourth House of Acquarius. Lagna in Scorpio.
Ketu in Leo (10th). Mars exalted in Capricorn. Sun in Pisces and Jupiter and Venus in 7th in Taurus. (Ve Vargottama).
So does this change the Bhadra Yoga?
Will certainly go through the Combustion Article for more information.
    Thanks,
    Prahalad.

  28. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Prahalad, Namaskar
That helps a bit. Point is that IF that Mercury was acting as a strong benefic, then he would give PRAVRAJYA yoga in the third from arudha lagna. This is like running away to the mountains to learn yoga.
    Similarly a malefic in 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 10th forms Pravrajya yoga.

I have two charts of Mahapurushas. In the first case its Bhadra yoga joined the Sun. This is joined the arudha lagna and thus causing a small pravrajya yoga. The person would work half the year with teaching yoga in the USA, and when he earned enough money he would go to India and learn sanskrit, yoga, jyotish, etc. or whatever he was interested in for another six months until the money was used up.

In the second chart of Aries lagna with Venus in seventh house (malavya yoga) the arudha lagna is in Leo. This puts Venus in the third from arudha lagna and Venus is also strong in navamsa and unconjoined. This native did the same as the previous example. Only his interest was more in the arts of music! Thus the malavya yoga is working, but the native lives a very humble life and tends to depict the life of an ascetic at times.

So yes, they are great mahapurushas but the problem here was the placement from arudha lagna… really arudhas are very important as you can see.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  29. Vikas Shri Says:

Can we take up the chart of Vikas for discussion (if he permits) as it has some very good points to understand.

  31. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Vikas and Prem, Namaskar
This case has some similarities with the case of Prahalad. Lets first dwell into the position from lagna. Here its scorpio lagna and Saturn is debilitated in sixth (weak enemy, enemy loosing the battle) but the same Saturn is retro (at the verge of loss the enemy comes back with renewed strength) and hence by default this should be said to be BAD as the enemy overturns the native.

But, this is placed in the THIRD house from arudha lagna. Hence the retrogression ends up causing material prosperity as it acts like an exalted malefic in the third from arudha lagna. This is a very good position for rajayoga, but can tempt one to use force to get the necessary fruits of ones labor. So again arudha lagna changed the tides… its very important.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  32. Anna Says:

    Dear Visti,
I’ve started paying more attention to retrogradation sice you’ve started this thread, although I’ve always considered statinary and retrograde state as significant factors. I have couple of Qs for you to clarify my doubts. What effects can we expect when planet is stationary retro., in dusthana, good awashta, friendly sign- does it loose strenght of Vipareeta RY effect? Does karaka sifnification suffer? If that happens to be Saturn, tamasic, functional malefic, would it be desirable if it looses some strenght /no matter where it’s placed/.

If saturn is RY planet exalted, for Taurus lagna, which significations will suffer from its stenght /in direct motion/, anger over loss of power /stationary/?

How is GajaKesariY. affected when Ju has ‘little to give’, as you said, due to its retrograde status? One would expect that +effects would be significantly reduced if not denied altogether. If GKY is formed between JuRx and Moon in debilitation, is there any positive efect of this ‘regal union’?

    Thinking the best for you,
    Anna

  33. Anna Says:

    Dear Visti,

I need some clarification of your comment to Vikar and Prem’s question.

In Vikar’s chart we have deb., retro Saturn in Dusthana-6thH, and for that reason /retro/ you consider SaRx in dusthana deb. to be unable to anihilate enemies. they return with strenght/. At the same time you see the same Sa in another dushana-3rd, from AL, as a very positive factor, despite the fact that it is both deb. and retro.
Would you please elaborate on this. Plus, how would you treat this same Sa in 8th, worst dusthana?
    Regards,
    Anna

  34. Anna Says:

    -Neecha Bhanga
    Dear Visti,
From one of your comments, it seems that dasa of planet giving NBRY brings prosperity not one of deb.planet.

I’ve heard an oppinion that planet which causes NBRY loses part of its power to do good /it goes to cancelation od deb./ What will happen during the period of a deb. planet getting NB?
    Regards,
    Anna
    /Ju on AL, sorry/

  35. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Anna, Namaskar
Is ’stationary-retro’ the stationary state BEFORE retrogression or AFTER retrogression?
If its stationary BEFORE retrogression then the Malefic is loosing all his battles and moving to a halt, whilst if its a Benefic its like a Guru who has wasted all his mantra and knowledge on his students and clients.

However if its stationary AFTER retrogression, then for both malefics and benefics its a state of satisfaction after having put thorough effort into satisfying his own or others desires.

In both cases the stationary or vikala (Parasara) state is one of the weakest states (1/4th strength), and such a planet is not eager or desirous to do much. The planet is easily satisfied and doesn’t have high aspirations. If such a planet is in a weak rasi/navamsa this can be disastrous as even at the verge of death the person will not ask for medicine. In a sense the planet has no desires which makes it truly ready for liberation from the cycle of rebirth…

Just as Rahu represents planets in retrograde motion who are full of desires and strong needs, Ketu represents the stationary planets who are practically devoid of desires beyond that of the bodily necessary. I hope this is more understandable now.

You mention Vipareet Raja Yoga. Keep in mind that just one lord of a dusthana in another dusthana isn’t enough for VRY. It takes two to tango and so also two dusthana lords must have yoga for VRY to function. If both these are weak in Dusthana or strong in Kendra then the VRY is lasting and powerful.

Keep in mind that strong MALEFICS in third, sixth, ninth or eleventh from arudha lagna are VERY auspicious, but in the remaining houses they are not. So when Vikas’ has a retro-debilitated Saturn in sixth house from lagna it is bad because the enemies become stronger (retro) after their trials (debili.), but the twist to the situation is much like the story of Bhima… Every time his back would touch the ground from being pushed back by his enemies, he would rise again with TEN times the strength of his enemies! This is the situation arising from Vikas’ arudha lagna!

Ok.. now Neecha Bhanga. Neecha Bhanga means ‘cancellation of debilitation’. However, it doesn’t mean the planet is not debilitated, just that it will eventually rise out of debilitation just as Vyasa’s mother was a daughter of a fisherman but became a Queen due to the blessing of Parasara!
However, just as one mans misfortune can be anothers fortune, the opposite applies as well. Example: in the story of Karna - the incarnation of the Sun God, he was raised by a thatcher but rose to become the greatest warrior of Duryodhanas army… and thus the enemy of the Pandavas who Sri Krishna was supporting.
Its good to read these stories as they give great insight into the working of yogas in the charts. The latter was a situation where a ‘Neecha Bhanga’ did not result in a Rajyoga for Sri Krishna and the Pandavas but a Pravrajya yoga as the enemy gets stronger.

So BOTH Rajyoga and Pravrajya/Dur-yoga can arise from Neecha Bhanga depending on WHERE the same is arising. In the case of Vikas we would NEVER wish for that Saturn to get his neecha bhanga in the sixth house HAD IT NOT been for his placement of Arudha lagna… we simply don’t want the enemy to become stronger.

Now, there are various types of Neecha Bhanga and for the 4 types of Neecha Bhanga (one for each ayana/goal of life) the planet giving NB does not suffer. But there are other more temporal types of neecha bhanga, such as when an exalted planet is joined the neecha planet - in such a case the exalted planet looses his strength whilst the debilitated planet gets stronger.

Take the example of Bill Gates. In his case no matter which of the two lagnas viz. Gemini or Cancer lagna, the Sun stays the same. The navamsa dispositor of the Sun will show how much wealth he will amass in his life. In his case its Saturn and that Saturn is exalted! But he has his own problems with that debilitated Sun who has joined the fun. Sun Microsystems (go figure) as well as the government (too easy) continually drag him to court and give him fines due to his monopoly of the software market. This is a case of Rajbhanga Neecha Yoga, but unless you use Gemini Lagna you will not catch who that Sun is (Sun is third lord - enemy action).

    I hope this ‘enlightens’ you.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

    AL prevalence

    Dear Visti,
Mulling over your comments, as you see. One conclussion has striken me re Vikar’s chart. When effects on Lagna are different from those on AL, you seem to suggest that the later is more important, effects re to AL prevail.

Further ’streching’ this, one can deduct a conclussion /at least theretically/that can go directly/only to AL, since rashi constelations can be ‘overridden’ anyway
    Anna

  38. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Anna, Namaskar
Overridden is a wrong word in this case. Arudha lagna is where we measure success from. Ever tried to see the nakshatra dispositor of Arudha lagna? You will find this planet is almost always strong in the case of famous people.

In case of Vikas we are not ignoring the rasi position because we still see that enemies are getting stronger, yet the end benefit is shown from the arudha lagna and thus when the enemy gets strong, so does he. The two positions work together.

Take the example of a yoga called ASURA yoga. This happens when Jupiter or any of the three satvic planets are placed in the eighth house. It shows a disregard for life. So in other words the person will see cruelty towards life around them if they have such a position of Jupiter/Sun/Moon in eighth house. But what happens to that person who has Jupiter in the third or sixth from arudha lagna? Naturally such a person is peaceful and refrains from doing any bad Karma and so we have a saint born in a family/community of demons… the story of Prahlad. Both positions work together but the Arudha Lagna shows how you will react to the circumstances given by the positions from Lagna.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  39. Anna Says:

    Dear Visti,
This is crystal clear explanation I’d been searching for! All pieces are nicely put together, AL is no longer an ‘issue’ for me.
    Thanks so much,

Thanks for the explanations. Just few thoughts. How to judge the Atmakarak planet which is melefic, deblitated, retro and in dustshana(Ofcourse I am talking about my chart). The concept of nakshtra dispositor is interesting. I have never used this concept. What it will show in a chart.

In Navansha(Aries Lagna) Sat in 5 th House with house exchange with Sun ,which’s in 11 th house.Venus in 2nd House,Chandra in 7 th house.

The native ’s just entered into his Saturn Mahadasa & till today he ’s unmarried.I think this delay is due to Saturn. He ’s now 37 years . Whether Saturn give a good result due to the neechbhanga.

    Thanks

  42. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Rati, Namaskar
We need much more than this to judge the chart. But see that just as in the case of other charts, Saturn retrograde in the seventh and aspecting the ninth house gives delays in marriage during Saturn dasa.

Note that the ninth house is important for the finalization of a relationship into a marriage and malefics like Rahu and Saturn associating with it can delay marriage, whilst Mars’ association with the seventh can delay relationships from arising to begin with.

Tell him to wear an amethyst in silver on his left hand little/pinky finger after washing the ring and worshiping Saturn with the Rgveda mantra: ShannorabhiiSThaya…etc. to imbibe the gemstone.

Where is lagnesh/venus in this chart? Based on what is there neecha bhanga? the retrogression?

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  43. Rati Says:

    Dear Visti,
    Thanks for ur advice.
1.venus is in leo with Ketu.
2.In my opinion ,Saturn ‘ll get it’s neech bhanga as it’s in Aries with Retro.i.e. deblieted n retro.
    3. Saturn in Bharani Nakshtra.
    4. The native’s wore a Lapiz lazuli on Saturn finger.

AL in Gemini ,upapada in Gemini (as per fourth house rule),a7 in leo.

    Saturn(R) ,which ’s 11th from AL.Does it indicate a good result ahead?

    Thanks
    Rati,

  44. Rati Says:

    Dear Visti,

Also the 5 th House is occupied by Rahu n 10 th Lord Moon.
You just see this peculiar situation.
The native ’s a Highly qualified from Finance Profession. But got the service after a lots of Struggle.i.e. in jup +Sun dasa in 2001.( After praying Goddess Durga).
In my opinion ,it’s because of conjuction of 10 th lord n fifth lord Rahu in th house. After the prayer 10 th house ’s activated.

Again another interesting fact,9th lord Mercury(r) conj. with 11 th lord n 3/6 th lord Jupitor in 12 th House i.e. Virgo..He got this Service because from the help of his Relatives n some influece.

Also I thought it’ll indicate foreign travel, because of jupiter being 3rd/6th lord in 12 th house.

    Thanks

    Rati

  45. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Rati, Namaskar
Well, I was hoping to get the entire birth details, yet see now that Saturn is aspecting both Upapada and Arudha lagna by graha dristi… he lives like a bachelor and his actions are not exactly promotive of marriage.

Take the case of Adoplh Hitler. Arudha lagna in Cancer joined Saturn as Upapada is in second house receiving Rasi dristi from Saturn. He also didn’t marry and lived as a renowned bachelor yet kept one alliance in the background. He solemnized his marriage to her only prior to his suicide.

So Saturn is making him act and live like a bachelor.

Saturn-finger, Jupiter-finger, etc. is all fine when talking about palmistry but when advising which finger to wear gemstones we must keep in mind 1) which hand we are using. 2) which ayana (finger) we are using. He should wear it on the left hand as we wanto LESSEN the malefic impact of Saturn on his life, and protect his intelligence (lagna) and dharma (ninth house).

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  46. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Rati, Namaskar
Have you heard the lecture on fifth house? If you pray to the devata of the fifth lord your FUTURE will begin. I always advise this especially if the person has malefics there, or lording the fifth.
Rahu lords the fifth house of aquarius… go figure.

To travel you need i. Visa (ninth house), ii. a place to stay (twelfth house) and iii. a plane ticket (seventh house). So it looks like there is visa and a place to stay, but no interest or need/desire to travel or buy the ticket (seventh house)… unless you let us know where Mars is in this chart… better to just supply the birth details already.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  47. Brenda Says:

    Dear Visti,

Your articles are very informative and enlightening, thank you so much for sharing! I’m also impressed by your generous comments and hope that you might shed some light on my situation as I have three major planets in Kendra in retrogradation. Are these houses and their significations destroyed because of this? These retrograde planets are as follows:

Mercury (lagnesha for Virgo lagna, in Gemini in 10th house)
Jupiter & Saturn in Sagitarius in 4th house

Furthermore, Mercury, Moon (in 10th) and Venus (in 11th with Sun) are combust!!! But then according to Sanjay Rath, Direct Venus and Retrograde Mercury are not combust. Is that true? It seems the more I read about jyotish the more confused I get.

Looking at past events, it appears Mercury has maintained its beneficial status and brought me quite a bit of good results (and some bad ones). For instance, during the Mercury dasa, I graduated from college and won a small lottery, with which I bought a house. I would really appreciate it if you could let me know whether these planets are beneficial or malefic and what gems I should wear to improve my circumstance. Having gone through 6 years of Ketu dasa and Sade Sati, I feel a sense of hopelessness, especially after reading that my major retrograde planets are malefic! If you care to look into my chart in detail, the birth info is July 23, 1960, 11:05 a.m., Daylight savings time, 22N17, 114E09, 8 hrs E.

    Thanks in advance!

    6.Though he asked me about his intention to change the job;
but I’m confused about his D-9.
As per Aries Lagna, trines are occupied by Saturn n Ketu.
As per this u see Lagna lord is conj. with Rahu.As per Pt. Sanjayji, it indicates difficulty faced by the mother during his birth. He ’s a finance Professional n Working for the Govt.Ketu indicate good in mathematics. It’s correct he’s very good in math at school level. But difficulty in birth is not matching.

As per Taurus lagna ,Venus in Lagna.2 nd lord mercury indicate his Profession.(in his own house).
Pariverthan by 4 th n 10 th lord. Also he’s a good looking one( a little to what u call as handsome).I’m taking Taurus lagna. Is it correct.

Now I think Saturn ’s promising a better future n travel to abroad.

    Dear Brenda, Namaskar
The combustion degrees do change when the inner planets (Venus and Mercury) are retrograde. The next issue of the Jyotish Digest has an article by myself on this topic as well as examples.

Did you check your Moola dasa? You do have that curse of Brahmin caused by the affliction of Jupiter by Saturn and Rahu. Right now the Mula dasa of Rahu-Saturn is running from November 2005 to July 2008.
Sometimes we need the mothers help to cross over the troubles of this life. Its a good time to seek the help of Mother Tara.

    I hope this helps.

    Dear Sri, Namaskar
You have the same problem as Brenda, but in the tenth house. Check your moola dasa and you will be able to confirm the same. To add a point of discussion; curses formed by retrograde planets are very difficult to remove and are caused by the intense sorrow caused to another person in our past life. So also the sorrow is difficult to remove in this life.

Your curse is in the tenth house and the remedy is seen from Mercury - the lord. Mercury indicates the Guru Vyasa. Do worship him with the eight syllable mantra.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

    Dear Rati, Namaskar
Nodes on the navamsa lagna cause birth by forceps. This is not very unusual these days and is by now means cause of a problematic delivery for the mother.

Kali is not the wrong advise as Moon is also in Saturns sign. Also see that Saturn lords the seventh from Venus.
    Also add fasting on Wednesdays.
    Good analysis work. Its commendable.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  55. Tarun Garg Says:

    Dear Vistiji

    Namaskar!!

I was looking at the remedies that you were suggesting for the curses for Brenda and Sri above. for Brenda you suggest Tara Devi cause Jupiter, the Karaka for the 5th house and also the lord of saggitarius is involved in the curse himself so we need to resort to the diety of the 5th house which as per your lecture was Tara Devi. Clear

However for the case of Sri, you suggested Guru Vyasas 8 akshari mantra. for Me. Me is placed in the 11th house which as per Sanjay Ji is a very evil house quoting from Jaimini’s Tano Dando….

Also why 8 akshara mantra(8 is not even a trine for the 11th house?) and why the form of a guru…

Sorry for my questions, as I mentioned to you before in one of my posts, this whole system of remedies is still eluding me. There has to be some calculation logic behind it otherwise it cant work always right?

    Regards

    Tarun Garg

  56. Brenda Says:

    Dear Visti,

Thank you very much for your comments! Please forgive my ignorance (I have ordered your book and will study it thoroughly when it arrives…yet it may take a while since it’s coming from India to the US) but is the Brahmin curse on Jupiter, the 4th house, as well as the 5th house (as Tarun Garg suggested, since Jupiter is karaka for children)? If so, can we say that the curse has been fulfilled since I don’t have any children? Or, will there be additional suffering related to the 4th house and Jupiter? Could you please give some examples of what they might be?

And since the curse-causing planet Saturn is retrograde, does that mean the curse is very severe and hard to remedy? What could one have done in a past life to contract such a harsh curse? Also, as Jupiter is karaka for wealth too, does it mean that I’ll be bereft of wealth, in spite of raja, gaja-kesari, vasumati, and kedaara yogas in the rasi chart? I was so looking forward to the Venus Maha dasa as it rules 2nd and 9th, and is deposited in the 11th in the rasi, and according to your article on Hora, Venus aspects the Hora Lagna and sits in the 5th from it (speculation, etc.). Or, is Venus also useless since it is combust (so Direct Venus is not combust is not true?)? Is there any good planet in my chart?

I looked up my Moola dasa in JHora and it shows that I’m currently running the Venus dasa (from 7/23/96) and Mercury Antardasa (from 8/11/05), and the Rahu dasa won’t start until 2023. Did I select the wrong option?
Regarding your suggested remedy, again, please excuse my ignorance but how would I get the help of Mother Tara?

    Thanks!

    Brenda

  57. Tarun Garg Says:

    Respected Visti ji

First of all sorry to have intruded into the discussion that you were having with Brenda, and maybe i misled it cause i had due to some strange reasons Leo ascendant and hence the 5th house discussion(Usually happens when we get co-ordinates instead of the place name).

However since Saturn who delivered the curse is the 5th lord so its houses can suffer also and hence the children could have suffered. so the involvement of the 5th house could still be justified.

So for the Tara Devi Remedy did you have the moon-mercury Yoga in the mind as Moon is the Karaka for the 4th house and it joins Mercury in the 10th house?

    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Tarun and Brenda, Namaskar
As Saturn lords the fifth and sixth house in the curse that is where the sorrow will come from. The excuses or issues which arise to bring or add to this suffering are seen from the placement of the curse which is the fourth house showing problems with mother, home and also those who work in the home (saturn in fourth).
Father or Gurus/teachers have an important role to play in all this as Jupiter is the natural lord of the ninth house.

Because the mother is seen from the fourth house i have advised worship of the divine mother. As the curse is that or Jupiter I have advised the teacher among the mothers, namely Sri Tarini. If you know a form of the mother who is a divine teacher then begin worshiping her regularly. Otherwise try the simple nama-mantra: Om Tarayai Namah. Begin worship with this mantra for atleast 3×108 times a day. Through this remedy you will begin learning more about Tara and the nature of the remedy.
A more practical solution is seen from Jupiter itself. Jupiter represents spiritual people and in the fourth it represents spiritual organizations/temples. Best thing to do is donate items to a temple/church and help out with celebrations and whichever needs they have. Donations and offering ones service is key here.

Btw. In the options for Moola dasa i have selected to only calculate the same from Lagna, not Sun or Moon.

For the future expect a discussion related to remedies wherein you can ask these questions. However i think the past lectures have dealt specifically with remedies for curses.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

Mainly because I don’t like giving mantras other than Prasiddha in public forums.
Mercury is lord and karaka for the tenth and is well placed showing the remedy is Vyasa or Vishnu. If the lordship is well placed prefer the Guru of the graha - more later.

Thank you for your comments, suggestions, and patience! There is so much more to learn in jyotish, going through your book, articles and recordings are probably a good place to start. I just hope that there is some saving grace in Saturn being a trikona lord, and Jupiter being in its mooltrikona sign. How ironic is that the cursed Jupiter is in the Moola nakshatra!

    Thanks again,

    Dear Visti,
    Namaste,

After taking ur opinion, into consideration ;I’ve examined the previous chart again.

    1. Now i’m taking Virgo as Ul.(because more planets in it).
But as per 4th house rule ,it’ll be Gemini.(but no planets in it).If i’ll take Virgo ,2nd house lord is Venus, which ’s in Leo with Kethu.(Aspected by Saturn ).Always I prefer Rasi dristhi.Venus in Taurus in D-9 chart.Accord’ly
    I expect a mixed result .

2.On Travel , 7th lord Mars in Dhanu has Rasi Dristhi on 12 th house i.e. Virgo (11 th lord+9 th lord+12th lord). Also d-9 and d-10 chart matched it.So Success in Abroad.
3.AL in GEmini and Mars(malefic one) in 7 th house indicates lots of struggles.

I’ve suggested to worship Siva n Durga/Kali (as suggested by u).

If I’ve a made mistake or if, u’r n’t agree on any principle ;just correct me.

    Thanks

    Dear Rati, Namaskar
    1. Why are you changing the rule? Upapada is in Gemini no doubt. Why are you looking at the sustainer of marriage (second lord from UL) before the marriage has happened (UL itself)?

    2. Our concern is whether the mahadasa of Saturn will support the ninth, twelfth and seventh lords. This saturn is in the seventh house and gives argala to Mercury in the twelfth house as well as Mars in the third house. Both fifth and eighth house argalas are ’sookshma’ argala, i.e. they are subtle and do not give foreign travel in the begining of the dasa. But the desire is definitely there as Saturn joins the seventh and aspects the ninth.
    Any planets in Aquarius?

    3. Yes.

What happened to the amethyst - must be left hand? Also please stick to only one remedy at a time.

    Yours sincerely, Visti.

    Dear Visti,

I am a student of Lakshmi and I have a question on Combustion:
The two outer Planets Saturn and Jupiter do radiate there influences through the Sun when combust. For those two it means a purification with the result that the soul in us becomes more clear.
The question is about Mars, who also is an outer Planet like Saturn and Jupiter.
Mars is not mentioned in the text on Combustion, and I know that Mars also has a spiritual side. Look at Scorpio where Mars takes the lead in diving deep into the being. Or the tories about Hanuman who is the deity of Mars and a real selfless worker, in contrast or as an extention of Saturn. So I presume that the combustion of Mars has
a result that when the Planet comes out of Cobustion the deeper nature of Mars will be shown as a selfless worker in his/her initiatives, in his/her energy. This would be the purification? Am I right? Please correct me.

    Dear Job,
One thing Sanjay told me is that Mars is a hot planet, so his combustion with Sun only serves to create a “hotter” influence and that Mars isnt hurt as much by combustion.
Likewise, the planets that are closer to Sun in orbit can come closer to Sun without as many problems.
Make sure you read about the special consideration for the retrograde motion of Venus.
Why dont you go to Visti website and ask him your question,(on his forum)

im happy to see your hard and serious work in astrology,

Combustion in detail, as Avastha, for outer and inner Planets, compared with retrogression.

    Om Sri Gurave namah
    Dear Amit,
The Sun is the Atma of the universe and its primary activity is defined by its adhi devata Agni (fire). Agni has been considered in the sastra as the deity who
    (1) takes our prayers to the gods with ‘svaha’ and to the manes (pitris) with ‘svadha’,
    (2) illumines the mind with spiritual and transcendental knowledge as it rules the third eye (jagat caksyu),
    (3) creates, maintains and dissolves the entire manifested creation (Surya – trimurti svarupa), and
    (4) purifies the individual beings by cleaning them with spiritual heat, etc. This cleansing of individual beings or the burning of sin is the phenomena of combustion.

It is evident that the combustion of different planets has different connotation. Some illustrations:
    • Jupiter’s combustion can be understood from Varahamihira (Brihat Samhita) explains that just as gold is purified by coming through fire, so also Brihaspati (Jupiter) is purified and shines (with spiritual lustre on the thirteenth day) after its conjunction (combustion) with the Sun. This day marks the beginning of the jovian years when this combustion occurs in Krittika (or Mrigasira) Nakshatra or this day marks the beginning of the jovian cycle of sixty years when this combustion happens in Dhaista Nakshatra. These occasions are celebrated as the Kumbha and Maha-Kumbha mela respectively every twelve years. We may conclude that the combustion of Jupiter produces spiritual shine and this combination of the Sun & Jupiter is what represents a temple or a pilgrimage and the udder of the cow, because by visiting the temple, the individual burn s his sins just like the drinking of the pure milk of a happy cow removes all diseases of the body. Technically, the combustion of Jupiter is for 12 degrees or 12 years.
    • The combustion of the Moon can be understood from the Purana. The Moon is the greatest blessing on a girl (Venus) as she becomes a mother (Moon). The Moon does not differentiate between married or unmarried nor does it consider the legal sanctity of the union when blessing a couple (especially woman) to become a mother. This is a fact as pregnancy can happen to any lady irrespective of whether she is married or not or whether she is uniting with a man who is her legitimate spouse. These are the two possible flaws of (1) Krisna chaturdasi dosa (sexual union without marriage) and (2) Amavasya Dosha (sexual union with one who is not legitimate spouse), that cause terrible sin. This brings the curse of Ganesha & Brihaspati, as on Chandra the Moon god. Thereafter, the Moon spends a day (Sukla pratipada) in repentance and prayer. Thus, the effective combustion of the Moon begins two days (24 degrees or two tithi) before its conjunction with the Sun and ends after one day (12 degrees or one tithi).
    • Similarly, the combustion of Venus is to be understood as the anger of Siva (pratyadhi devatä of the Sun) on Kama devatä thereby reducing him to ashes or the swallowing of Sukra where the latter had to do penance for twenty years (20 years = 20 degrees, post conjunction or recovery period).
An important noteworthy point is that the combustion before conjunction is considered very sinful meriting ‘Dosha criteria’ while that after conjunction indicates a period when one is in spiritual seclusion. In this manner, the combustion of other planets can be understood.

Coming to the question, the Sun is all known as ‘dvadasatmane’ and possesses twelve forms representing the spiritual soul in the twelve signs. The names of the Sun god in the twelve signs are given below, and a detailed study of these forms of the Sun shall explain the meaning implied by the combustion in a chart when the Sun is in different signs.
    Table 1: Surya dvadasatma
    Sun Sign
    Aries Aryama
    Taurus Mitra
    Gemini Varun
    Cancer Indra
    Leo Vivaswan
    Virgo Pusha
    Libra Parjanya
    Scorpio Anshuman
    Sagittarius Bhaga
    Capricorn Twastha
    Aquarius Vishnu
    Pisces Dhata

    Dear Harpreet,
What is there to argue, the planets are within the given orb for combustion and hence they are combust. Combustion of Jupiter will make you pass through a phase of spiritual growth like gold passing theorugh fire to come clean and combustion of Saturn will burn the sins attributed to adharma you did in the past birth by forcing you to serve elders and father.
    Best wishes

    FROM VARAHIMIHIRA
    Om Vishnave Namah
    Dear Yasomati Nandana,

You are very humble. Combustion is a state of being and is another AVASTHA like retrogression. In combustion the planet loses its own Rays whereas a planet in retrogression is full of Rays (Venus being the exception). Thus the combustion of a planet indicates its lack of influence on the chart by way of its natural nature and the planet shall be obliged to work for the sun alone and its significations. It shows a person who is under the dominating influence of a superior in the matters related to the signification of the planet. For example if Venus is combust, the artistic side can be lacking whereas if Mercury is combust the learning abilities are
clouded or simply focused on the activities of the sun (Dharma) and other learning is not present or not of much consequence.

In the converse if a planet is retrograde, then its influence is very strong as it tends to initially give a strong desire and then abilities as well but not the results. The results are very difficult to achieve as the person is
over ambitious in matters related to it and has very high GOALS. For example Saturn is my AK and is retrograde. This shows traditional learning as well as a strong desire and almost impossible goals to achieve in matters pertaining to the tradition. I expect too much from everybody in terms of sincerity and dedication to Jyotish and sometimes this can be very painful.

Now what happens in Graha Yuddha? Can a combust planet win? Yes it can. Take an example. If four planets conjoin (as in the case of one of this list members), it shows spirituality of a high order and if one of them is
combust and also ahead of the Sun, then it defeats the Sun and although due to the combustion the native shall be very spiritual or interested in Dharma and such learning, Sanyasa Yoga cannot occur and renunciation will not
happen in this life. Thus combust planets cannot give Sanyasa as the rays are not original and the desires pertaining to its significations are generally suppressed or absent. Suppression of desires is not the path to
spirituality, getting over them is true spirituality.

    Best Wishes

    Dear Visti ji, Namaste.

I had a question about my own chart [dob: Oct.27, 1962, pob: Meerut, UP, India; tob: 11:39am] in relation to malefics: what are the significations when natural malefics are in yuti [conjunct] but one of them is a functional benefic - I have Shani [a benefic] with Ketu in dhan/kutumb sthan and Mangal [a benefic] with Rahu in mrityu sthan. The other worry, in fact the most singificant and current, is due to the fact that I have been unable to finish my higher degree on which my whole career and future prospects are dependent; is it due to a retrograde Guru and malefic Surya? For more than 10-12 years I have been out of regular employment and life in general has been, I could say, devoid of any comforts and I feel very very low in terms of confidence and motivations. Kindly suggest how could I meliorate the situation. Regards.

    Dear Job and Pathik, Namaskar
    Job
Mars’ main problem is anger. This is his flaw and for this he will be punished by Shiva for being unable to control the anger. So in a sense a purified Mars is one devoid of anger.
The next Jyotish Digest will post a more detailed analysis of combustion on my part, do read it.

    Pathik
I’ve written extensively on the major reasons for job problems in my book: Jyotisha Fundamentals.
Among the various indications of job problems we can see that your tenth house is strong showing that you are not physically unable to work. Your tenth lord from Moon is also strong showing that there is the support from society.
    Now comes the predicament:
The fourth from the Sun shows availability of jobs, and here a Shraddha yoga is joined. This also happens in the tenth from your arudha lagna showing that your reputation/title/status has been colored by this.

This happens in the second/eighth axis from the lagna and can cause daridra yoga for penury and suffering.

So why is all this happening? There is a Pitri shapa in your chart, which may have arisen around the time of demise of a maternal relative. It shows that the shraddha has not been done properly for that relative and this is the remedy in itself.
To this i will add that you must worship Sri Vishnu to overcome the Pitri Shaapa in your chart.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

I do not know how many graces, such as yours, get me through the day and I have no means, or audacity, to reciprocate these gestures. Regards. Sincerely, pathik

  78. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Pathik, Namaskar
We also call the yoga when the nodes are yuti Shani: Preta dosha, where the ancestors or dead are still hanging around this world and have not been given relief from their sorrow due to their descendants actions. This causes poverty, disease and sorrow to the native (all saturn).

Similarly when the nodes join Mars its called Pisacha dosha, where the dead spirits are full of anger and thus causing danger to their descendants or victims. This causes fights arising out of no where, fear of black magic/possessionm accidents, etc.

Usually the shastras indicate that any association between the nodes and saturn/mars indicates black magic or spirits tormenting the person.

To overcome Pitrishapa treat your parents well if they are alive, otherwise make sure the Shraddha ceremonies are being done properly and regularly. Offering water with the Suryaastakshari given in Surya Upanishad is one of the best remedies.

Specifically for you i would add reciting the Dharma Gayatri of the Rg Veda which starts with: trinipada vicakrame…

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

  79. Pathik Says:

    Thanks again Visti ji,
You mention in your lecture on “Malefics” that worshipping Lord Shiva takes the fear out of the native and tends to make one fearless, if perhaps problematically so, I was wondering if there were prayers that could make one recover one’s self-confidence.
The other thing is that I cannot seem to find readily the Dharm Gayatri, although I’ll keep looking, I’ll be very much grateful if you could provide me that. Regards,

    one clarification.

Is it that during gochara Retrogression (say Saturn right now), is it that effects are more malefic for individuals who have Retro planet (Saturn R in my case) in natal chart? I think I read something like this in Sanjayji’s lecture.

Can we expect the opposite? When the planet becomes direct, would the malefic effects reduce for the said individuals above?

    Any comments?

Personally, I think the effects are true as I can vouch for this as the past few months have been terrible.

    Dear Sri, Namaskar
Yes, this brings another perspective of retrograde planets. If a planet is retro in the natal chart, then when that same planet also becomes retro in the transit chart, the specific results can come to pass.
However, this isn’t always bad, it depends on the placement of the particular planet in the natal chart. In some cases there can be talk of a temporary lift in career, whilst in others there is a temporary fall.

Yes, when the motion changes the results will also change.

    Dear VV, Namaskar
Yes this is true. Venus becomes retrograde only once every 2 years (about 22 months), whilst Mercury does so 4 times a year.
Mercury shows the business world which runs after money taking every new opportunity they can find for greater earnings, and ever trying to protect their stocks from plummeting… read the story of how Sri Buddha distracted the Asuras away from such activities.

Instead Venus shows passion and intense desire for companionship and intimacy. It symbolizes the attachment of every man/woman and the tenacity with which they will protect their loved ones. Read the story of how Sri Parasurama butchered the royal families for many generations to protect the Brahmins.

  92. kat Says:

    Dear Visti ji,

An excellent explanation and discussion. Thank you very much, it explains a lot.
What happens when saturn lagna lord, retrograde and in own house? Own house means strength but being retrograde means it because weak. Further if saturn is lagnesh then signs of weak lagna lord would be weak/destroyed “dhi” shakti and effect whole chart. I recall reading that to remove tamasic qualities of saturn to worship surya, however if surya is 8th lord then what happens? So how is lagna lord strengthened in such a case? Should it be strengthened when it is a planet like saturn?

Even further if lagna lord is weak (remedy=sun worship/mantra) and surya is 8th lord in 7th hse means worship/mantra of 8th lord AND there is guru-chandal (yuti) yoga aspecting lagna then what to do? I think I have picked too difficult a chart/eg to try and study! I picked this from one of the yahoo groups.

Details are: Female. Capricorn lagna. 29 July 1965, nairobi, kenya. Time: Shes not sure, writes 6:45-8:00pm. I worked it as possibly 6:45pm or 7:20pm.

Between this 2 times, rasi lagna stays same but navamsa changes. I thinking its one of this two coz these 2 is closest matching her abilites she describes and also father dying early (navamsa 9th lord debilitated.

Any light you can give on this please?

    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
Dear Nirmala, Milind and Dinesh, Namaskar

    Nirmala
Saturn is strong by his placement.. very strong, but if he is involved in a curse this can turn adverse whereas if he is otherwise he can give rajayoga. His placement from Lagna and Arudha lagna (especially) should be checked for this as we have indicated on this website.

    Milind
Your query has little to do with retrogression, but i will give you some insight.
You have inadvertedly indicated the problem yourself. You have been experiencing the curse of spouse (from past life) since 1999. Since then your luck has been taken away from you (ninth house) as well as your sense of freedom (ninth house shows freedom of movement)… as you said it felt like jail.
Venus is the fifth lord and its affliction brings a stop to the future and we need to remedy these two issues. A big problem is that Mars is also retrograde and involved in the curse and makes the ANGER hard to remove.

Worship Narayana everyday with the Astakshari mantra: Om Namo Narayanaya.
To overcome the curse please worship Sadashiva. The best mantra i know is the Shadakshari: Om Namah Shivaaya.

Good luck with the future, after July things will get difficult again but the Guru is blessing you and you will be able to overcome this.

    Dinesh
You are very spiritual no doubt. Know that these planets give pravrajya yoga or renunciation. As Mercury and Venus are also here and in the third from arudha lagna, it points towards this. However, because venus is weak in navamsa it shows that you are not inclined to give up on the idea of marriage so easily and this can always put you on the edge of either samsara and sanyasa. You need to make a firm decission on this as you cannot do both. My advise is to worship Rudra. A good mantra is this one: Om Namo Rudraaya|

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

  94. Milind Mulgund Says:

and sufferings of having the same rashi and lagna.

  96. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Kat, Namaskar
Let me start by stating that all worship is beneficial no matter if the Devata whom the planet signifies has a problematic lordship or association in the chart.

So you can easily worship Surya. The problem comes when advising gemstones or graha-mantras.

As for the ladies chart, you forgot to mention that Saturn was debilitated in navamsa. We don’t use the lordship of the various houses in navamsa to see our relatives. Only the spouse and her relatives are seen here. Instead the natives own relatives are seen in dvadasamsa.
Still we can use navamsa to see the strength of planets relative to the rasi. Ninth lord in rasi is Mercury and its dispositor is the Sun. The dispositor will show the health and here Sun is debilitated in the navamsa showing that father may not have strong health in his life.
The ninth lord from the Sun will indicate sambandha/relationship between the native and their father and whether its lasting or gets severed. Ninth lord from Sun is Jupiter who is joined Rahu which can give premature demise or separation from father. Rahu further afflicts the Pitrupada (a9) by rasi dristi confirming this fact.
Jupiters house-position in the navamsa needs to be assessed.

Coming to Saturn. Because he is debilitated in the navamsa, the retrogression actually takes him out of the problematic placement. So here we have a person who will rise out of a terrible situation where all their fortune has gone. Which fortune? See the rasi. Saturn is placed in the second house and threatens to ruin the family, finances and any groups/organisations she is a part of. This Saturn is placed in the twelfth from arudha lagna and points towards some ‘politics’ being the cause.

She will come out of the mess through her own sheer effort, so congratulations to her on this.

    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

Yes i understood what you were referring to, but I wanted to show you the real cause of suffering being the Curse of wife.

As for the Moon vs. Lagna it shows a person who knows when to catch the tide of the world. I.e. they understand the community and also when to engage in new works. So when the sade sathi happens over both it shows how the persons judgement gets clouded and they begin to make mistakes and ‘miss the tide’.

I have commented on your chart based on the curse, please follow my advise in this regard as it will tend to override the transit results in your chart.

    Namaskar Visti.

How cool to see a Danish vedic Astrology site! I am impressed with your depth of understanding. I have a question: I’ve been having a really hard time finishing college and getting my career together. I can’t seem to get the motivation together to finish my last few assignments and get my teaching credential. I have done quite a bit of energy healing and astrology, but so far I am having a hard time being successful and making a living. My meditation has been very good and am doing pujas and having good bhavas, experiences and insights. Mainly spiritual benefits and hard to make ends meet materially. I am going to have a Jupiter yajna soon so that should help. Any suggestions and helpful comments?

    Sincerely,
    Lance R. Lammon (Shrihari)

    Dear Mr. Larsen,

How do we interpret the following placement?

In a Virgo Lagna chart Retrograde Jupiter is placed in Capricorn in its debilitation sign (5th from lagna)and in navamsa chart (capricorn lagna) Retrograde Jupiter is exalted in Cancer (7th from lagna).

The session on retrograde planets is excellent and the principles seem very logical. Your teaching techniques are just amazing. Thanks for instlling that love of jyotish in us through your wonderful website and its contents.

    Regards,

    Dear Vistiji,
    Namaskar.
    In my chart
    24 Dec, 1974
    12:55 Hours (IST)
    Meena lagna, mesha rashi
What happens when Saturn is Atmakaraka, retrograge and is the lord of AL (Capricorn) and is placed in the sixth from the AL (in gemini)?
Here retrograde Saturn (AK) in gemini is a friendly sign but a dushtana (6th house).
    1) Will the native win over the enemies? (Parakrama yoga)
    2) Will the enemies flee or backtrack due to Saturn being retrograde.
    3) AL lord in the sixth house means Dhimantah Yoga….so will the battles lead to increase in knowledge or won through intelligence?
    Thanks and Regards

Dear Lance, Rani and Tarak, Namaskar.

    Lance
I’m glad you like the site.
I almost missed this mail of yours and do have some advise to impart to you.
Your issue is due to your Atmakaraka being Rahu. As a result you will be very spiritual and be very learned in meditation practices. However, when Rahu is the atmakaraka it will reject the planets, signs and arudhas in the ninth from it. Here you have Jupiter who is the significator for finances and is also the fifth lord of future and prosperity.
Further, to analyze finances we need to see the second lord and chara darakaraka. Both are Mercury and its relevant to see if the atmakaraka is placed in the 3rd of 7th from it. Atmakaraka is placed in the third from it and promises difficulty in earning and attaining wealth. As a result the problems will be lifelong due to s
