Fundamentals of Karaka

हरे राम कृष्ण॥

Atma (soul), Mana (mind) and Tanu (body). These correspond to the i) Charakarakas, ii) Naisargika karakas and iii) Sthira karakas respectively. The dhi or intelligence is an addition to these three, which has been created by Vasudeva (refer creation). Through the lagna we have Bhaava. Look up the sanskrit word for this and you will find that it means much more than just house. It means ‘approach’ or ‘manner of acting/condition, state etc’.
So each bhaava in the chart shows:
i) how we approach a certain aspect of life (bhaava itself)
ii) how we are approached by those people indicated by those aspects of life (bhaavesha - lordship)

For now i will omit the Chara karakas from this discussion. We are thus left with:
i. the analysis of the mana/mind (karaka) and its experiences with certain bhaavas.
ii. the analysis of the mana/mind (karaka) and its experiences with certain people (bhavesha).

Bhaava from Lagna shows how you approach those various activities in life. I.e. if you have Mars in tenth you will be aggressive in work. If you have Saturn in tenth you will be very slow and take your time to finish things. If you have nodes in seventh you may cheat on your wife (ref: sarvartha chintamani). Now why do you think Parasara says that if Mars is in seventh the native will have three broken marriages?
It has to do with ones approach, and naturally how you approach is what you get.

Bhaava in the rasi shows how ‘I’ approach the various aspects of my life, but to get a detailed understanding of the character and traits of other people i must see the divisional chart associated with them. In a sense the Rasi is the self-centric view of everything, and thus becomes the most important chart. I.e. Seventh house in rasi shows how I approach relationships, but its the seventh house in navamsa through which i can describe the spouse and his/her traits.

Bhaava from Karaka
shows how we experience various activities in life. I.e. the sambandha between Venus and the fourth house shows how our experience of vehicles and similar comforts impact our PERCEPTION of vehicles. The sambandha between Venus and the seventh house will show how we see relationships and how they affect us. I.e. I have Venus in the second house and have had to come to terms with a very warped idea about relationships as the seventh house will sit in the sixth (celibacy, competitions, etc) from Venus. Had malefics also been placed in the seventh (wrong approach), or the seventh lord was associated with malefics (wrong partners) this could have been disastrous.

Bhaavesh from Karaka
shows how we experience various people in our life. I.e. the sambandha between Venus and the seventh lord shows how the specific partners affect us in life and make us feel. Thus the experience of married life vs. the experience of having a spouse/partner can be completely different things.

The Karaka-bhava, i.e. for Guru: ninth house/lord from Jupiter, or for relationships: seventh house/lord from Venus, show how that specific person is brought to your Mana/mind. The ninth house is there for every lagna, but yet not everyone has a Guru. So also if the ninth house/lord from Jupiter is under influence this will affect how ones Guru comes into ones life, or is inhibited from the same. Similarly everyone has a father, but if the ninth house/lord from Sun is afflicted then one may be separated from the father. Thus here we are analyzing to the various people coming to your attention/mind/mana.

Finally Karaka itself shows the overall nature of ones experiences related to that karaka. If Venus is afflicted the person will not look very happily at the prospect of relationships, i.e. Venus joined Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu can show: Ego, Anger, Sorrow, Shock and Headlessness as problems in relationships respectively. The more of these afflicting the same, the worse the situation, but this is attributed to the self and is a result of being in experiences with other people, but not necessarily caused by other people.

Whew!.. there is a lot more such as the sambandha between lords Tithi, Vara, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana with the various bhaavas, not to speak of the use of Chara karakas which are the most important.

I have given examples of these karaka/bhava principles in the seventh house chapter in my book. I do recommend referring to the same for further understanding.

Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

    Hi Visti,

What happens when karaka and Bhavesh become one. I have seen many such situation where it is difficult to ascertain how to predict in this situation.
ex Aquarius lagna - Venus in the 3rd (becomes badhkesh also), aspects the 9th house (7th from itself) and is also the Bhavesh. same can be there for Aries lagna also - venus in lagna aspect the 7th house.

Waiting to hear from you on this.

    Dear Prem, Namaskar.
Why is it difficult to predict? what are you trying to predict from the seventh from Venus? This shows where the spouse will come from, and then you must just treat Venus as the lord of that house. Please clarify your question.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.
  4. Prem Says:

    Hi Visti,

    My questions are basically:
    a) venus being the Karaka in the seventh house from its own house - what will it signify , would that mean that the native himself would defer relationship or the Karaka looking at its own house would denote native frequently getting into relationship.

    b) If Karaka on its own becomes the Badhkesh and it looks at 7th house from itself what happens in that case?

    c) Also should we see where the spouse would come from in the Navamsa ( 7th from venus) or rashi?

    d) Also venus is the significator for comforts what are relationships or aspects would it effect.

    e) Another question though this is more related to the Bhava classes uploaded from you. Venus the karaka and Badhkesh being in the seventh from its bhava comes into Kendra but being a badhaka should it not effect. or its being a badhaka is not be mixed in this perspective.

    Aloha Visti,

I was just wondering about Karakas. I was wondering about the wieght that its given vs the lord of the house? I have Rahu in my 7th house. the lord is Saturn and the karaka is Venus. How much influence does Saturn have over venus or visa versa? Is thsi a good placement for Rahu, since he is in a house of a friend Saturn? Any clarification, feeback or comments will be very much appreciated!

Thank you Visti, for sharing this good information.

  7. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Hi Prem, Namaskar.
    a) this is a question regarding the placement of KARAKA from its own RASI. This is not relevant for the native unless BHAVA is involved in the analysis. If Libra is the seventh house and Venus is in Leo, it shows a good approach and relationship between the native and his/her partners. Problem happens when its a 6/8 or 2/12 relationship.
However, referring to placement from the rasi alone we can make some inferences about how the WORLD sees the natives relationships. But, i wasn’t taught specifically in this regard and cannot comment.

    b) See above for clarity.
    c) The partner can be seen from the seventh lord from Venus in the Rasi chart. However, this lord which is ascertained from Venus’ placement in the rasi chart, can be seen in either rasi or navamsa - whichever is stronger. The stronger will indicate the distance and direction. I remember advising a person specifically in this regard and he is happily married.

    d) Heres a method: See the planets aspecting/joining the fourth house from lagna. If these planets are badly placed from Venus they can give bad experiences in matters of comforts/vehicles, etc. Similarly assess if they are well placed.
Example case: Leo Lagna and Rahu is placed in the third house in Libra. Venus happens to be in Taurus - tenth house. Rahu afflicts the fourth house through graha dristi (rahu has second dristi) and is placed in sixth (marana karaka sthana) from Venus. During Rahu antaradasa he had an accident with his car. As Moon is in Capricorn this puts Rahu in the tenth from Moon and can thus affect the persons SOURCE OF JOB-SUPPORT. With the ruining of the vehicle the person abruptly ended their job. In this manner you can analyze KARAKA and BHAVA.

    e) Badhakesh can be good or it can be bad. If benefic and joined benefics it will be very good and open all doors for the native. Usually this happens in a foreign country as Badhakesh is like Rahu.

    Hope this helps.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

P.S. I consider my clarity a blessing of Sri Vyasadeva. Just as the Vedas we ‘organized’ by him, so also the Jyotish Shastra needs to be divided and differentiated to understand the various facets. Vyasadeva is thus signified by Mercury and my Jupiter (understanding) is joined Mercury.

  8. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Hi Louis, Namaskar.
The lord of a house and its KARAKA have two separate uses.
The KARAKA is especially important because it shows YOUR MIND. I.e. how many people have you seen with afflicted Venus saying that they have experienced problems in
relationships? Just from analyzing Karakas in a horoscope you can get a great deal of understanding about the persons life.
I.e. if Jupiter is afflicted the person will have a problem with food, with teachers/gurus, etc. Especially when this is Graha Dristi. Thus in the tradition we are taught to assess a persons chart just by their behavior… i.e. Jupiter shows how much they like to eat, whilst the Lagna shows their taste. So if the person likes sweet food they will have a strong Jupiterian influence on their Lagna.

Now, this leads us to an important question. What if the seventh lord is well placed but Venus is not? Well its simple. Badly placed Venus means BAD EXPERIENCES. Well placed seventh lord means GOOD PARTNERS or partners coming from good circumstances.
Finally the seventh house itself shows how you relate to partners… are you doing something wrong? Do you have a bad attitude?
In this light we analyze the various parts and parcels of the chart, of course considering the main themes like curses and such.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen.

    HARE KRISHNA
SALUTATION TO UR GURU SRATH JI and
    PRANAM TO U SIR.

Sir my 1st question is What should a native do if he is found to be under the spouse curse.please correct me if i am wrong[ venus being the karak of 7th house if under the aspect of 2 or more malefics or conjoined leads to spouse curse]
i read in one of the sjc articles that curses taking place in fixed rasis are a bit hard to redeem and also abt the spouse curse that it neeeds to be checked in other divisional chart like d9 and especially in one of your lectures you did mention about checking the higer divisional chart like d60chart.given the conditions fulfilled, would you still see a ray of hope for the native to lead a peacefull marital life .

2]my second question is something that i have noticed many astrologers directly jumping to conclusion as to brand a person of loose morals and characterless when they come across a mangal sukra yog in the chart.Could you please throw some light on this and can you please authenticate abt mangal sukra combination in rasi chart and d9.

It has been a real joy to hear your lectures and read your articles. Please keep on spreading the light of jyotish.A million thanks to you.

  10. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Hi Sir, Namaskar.
    Answers to your questions follows:

    1) Curses.
All curses are to be ascertained in the rasi chart, and the analysis of D9 is to see the intensity of the curse. However, some overriding factors can dominate the intensity such as the involvement of retrograde planets in the curse. But generally we use the Navamsa for this.

The analysis of curses in the highest divisions namely D40, D45 and D60 are used to ascertain the cause of the karma, from a) maternal heritage (d40), paternal heritage (d45) and ones own past lifetimes (d60). The d60 is the most important in this regard because all karma is due to our own past, and we are born in certain families to undergo the same karma.

In either case, a curse of spouse doesn’t necessarily cause problems in the marriage itself, but always promises suffering to either 1) the partner or 2) oneself in the realm of partnerships. Point is that Venus is karaka for relationships and Karakas shows how OUR mind is affected in those relationships, whereas the seventh house and lord specifically affects the partner, and especially the lord in this regard.

Careful analysis of the malefics involved in the curse will tell the exact problem causing suffering… i.e. is it the spouse or is it a third problem.

    2) Character & Mangal-Shukra yoga.
By using the words: Mangala and Shukra, you are implying something very auspicious, as Mangala implies fortune and auspiciousness, whilst Shukra refers to Venus as the bright and resplendent morning star. So when using those names for the planets, there cannot be anything wrong.

However, Kuja/Bhaumaa as the name for Mars refers to him when he gets ready to fight/defend. Thus the name Kujadosha is ascribed to when Mars either aspects/joins the seventh house, or is placed in eighth house, and in addition we can add: conjunction with Venus.

Now, there are MANY meanings to the word ‘character’ styled in our usage of the English language and they range from anything dealing with ones reputation to the moral/ethical code of the individual. And thats just when trying to describe and individual.

As a first point i will say: 1) the character is seen from the lagna. However, i have also just mentioned that each karaka shows the persons mind in that particular area of life so i have to add the definition: 2) the predispositions of a person towards any area of life is indicated by its karaka… i.e. if venus is afflicted the person has a ‘wrong’ view of relationships as this is what the native has experienced in the past.
Example: If Venus is yuti Saturn the person has experienced coldness in relationships, and thus goes into new relationships with an expectation or rather ‘fear’ that there will be cold relationship between them and their partner.
For Mars yuti Venus there is a possibility of seeing anger/violence in relationships. This also imposes restrictions on the sexual life as well, i.e. celibacy and thus causes the person to feel bound down or restricted in their relationship with others.

Thus, I was taught that two possible effects are there for a Mars-Venus conjunction. Namely 1) extreme celibacy and delay in relationships/marriage & 2) extreme sexual libido.
If the combination associates with the 7th house by aspect/conjunction then the libido and kaama is high, whereas its association with the sixth house causes extreme restrictions.

But these two combinations don’t necessarily promote characterless behavior… unless there are indications for the same in the navamsa. For this i would recommend studying the Jaimini Upadesa Sutra in detail. Especially the chapter on Svamsa.
Here there are given a few important yogas:
    1) Moon-Merc yoga in trines to navamsa lagna, (or alternatively associating with the trines to seventh house - upadesa from tradition as the seventh shows ones sexual activity).
    2) Saturn-Ketu-Mercury associating with the same houses as above, alternatively Venus can be replaced with Ketu for extremely characterless behavior
    3) Venus in the second from svamsa and associating with Mars, Rahu and/or Jupiter severely increases the libido and causes characterless behavior.

These are a few. There are variations of the same but generally related to sexuality.
    Hope this helps.
    Yours sincerely, Visti Larsen

  11. Viresh Says:

    HARE RAMA KRISHNA
    Dear Vistiji

Thank you for such a short & sweet article on karakas as most ppl have confusion on use of karakas, houses etc & what each combination specifies. I do have a couple of doubts regarding the same

    (1) Bhaavesh from Karaka shows how we expirence various ppl. However we check for relationship between bhavesha & karaka should we check panchadhamaitri chakra or placement.
One doubt in this that i always had was that 5/9 relationship is supposed to be the best relationship between planets, but even then it would mean planets would be temporary enemies. So how should we interpret this?
You did talk about the successor concept, so benefic would take over from you in nice manner, whereas malefic could be hostile etc, wonder that has any link ?

    (2) Also lot of ppl asked me (my friends!) about where to expect their spouse from. Since we look for that from seventh from venus ( either rasi or navamsa whichever being stronger) should we look at the sign, as the sign indicates direction? ot the planets?

  12. Sharat Says:

    Hare Ram Krishna
    Dear Viresh,
Find the sign 7 th from Venus. The lord of this sign will bring the spouse, locate where it is stronger in rasi or navamsa. The place where spouse will come from will be indicated by the rasi sign where this planet sits, char(long distance), sthir(short distance) and dwiswabhav(intermediate distance).

    Hope this helps.
    Regards
    Sharat

  13. Viresh Says:

    HARE RAMA KRISHNA
Thank you Sharat for the answer
would still like to get answer for the first question
Also can we link lagnesha & karaka? since lagnesha is your intelligence & karaka is overall experience in a particular matter, so the relationship should show how our intelligence works with the experiece in particular aspect of our life

  14. Tarun Garg Says:

    Respected Visti Ji

I have a doubt regarding the principle of the 7th from venus and re-marriage. If the first spouse is brought about by the 7th lord from venus, how about the 2nd and 3rd and so on… especially considering the fact that if this spouse as per Pt. Sanjay’s teachings is when you are dedicted to one person for 1 year in your life.

    Regards

    Tarun

  15. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Hi Viresh and Tarun, Namaskar.

    Viresh
We use the bhava placements: kendra and trikona are good, whilst the rest pose problems where the 2/12 and 6/8 relationships are the worst.
We couple Pachakadi and MKS placements in this as well.

    Tarun
In truth the seventh from Venus is the first lover, and the second from venus is the next one. Like this we keep jumping to the eighth from each house to see the various relationships in life. The first girlfriend is not always the wife and this poses a problem in some readings.

However, we can always worship the seventh lord from venus to attract the future partners.

    Yours sincerely, Visti

    Dear Visti Larsen ji,

I Pranam you as Guru, who enlightens me with knowledge.

I am in confusiing with following statement appear on Varahmihiraa (Snapshot Method of Interpreting a Horoscope ) with your Bava Karaka explaining

    * Benefics and karakas placed in 2 or 12 th promote the house. Benefics either in the 2nd or 12th cause Subha yoga, whereas in both the house cause subhakartari yoga.

But you are saying 2/12 relationship, Karaka Bava with Karaka will be the problem.

It is seems to be contrary to above statement. Please explain me and remove my doubt.

    Hari Om !

    Regards,
    Hemantha Narayana (From Sri Lanka)

  17. Visti Larsen Says:
    हरे राम कृष्ण॥
    Dear Hemantha, Namaskar
The shubha yoga as you mentioned is all about someone feeding us or giving to us. Its a one-way relationship which benefits the individual but it not necessarily a good thing when it comes to ones relationship with people. i.e. you give give give and get nothing in return… does that make a good relationship?? only if you are spiritually able to handle it i guess.
And because of this the 2/12 sambandha between karaka and bhava (or its lord) is a problematic relationship.
    Yours sincerely, Visti.
  18. Sundeep Says:

    Dear Visti,
This is an absolutely brilliant and very thought provoking writeup, easily one of the best I have read in a long time. I have read it several times over and have been debating whether to actually post my questions, or read it a few more times to discover more depth.

But here goes - please note that my intention is to prod you to reveal even more of your deep knowledge, not criticize you in any way:
    1) You first imply that Bhaava means “approach”. So it should mean approach in all charts no? It’s not only D-1 that has Bhaavas, but all the other ones too. The contradiction is when later on, you go ahead and say that seventh house in D-1 shows approach to relationships, and seventh in D-9 shows nature of the spouse (no more “approach”). By looking deeper into all the things you have written in this article, it seems to me that what you have really implied is that the Bhaavas are simply the different parts of the entity being described by the particular chart. So, if we are talking about Rasi, then the entity being described is the “approach of the native in his physical existence” (here I am merging yours and PVR Narasimha’s thoughts). The 7th house, in any chart, refers to the part of the entity that deals with relationships. Putting the two together, D-1 in the 7th would be: “approach of the native in his physical existence towards relationships”. Similarly, D-9 talks about the “accrued dharma of the native”. So, 7th in D-9 would be “accrued dharma of the native in relationships”. This I assume would naturally imply the nature of the spouse (what else are you going to get in your spouse other than the dharma you have accumulated). This is what I get from looking deeper at your writeup - am I on the right track? To state differently, I notice that your approach is clearly two pronged - first you clearly understand what is the quantity being described, then you look at which part of the entity is being described in which house.

    2) Secondly, when you get to (Naisargika) Karakas, the same principle above must hold i.e. when we look at Bhaavas from Karaka, the essential symbolic meaning of the Bhaavas must be the same i.e. describing a part of the entity. So, when you say that Bhaavas from Karaka describe how we EXPERIENCE things related to the Karaka, it MUST mean that a Naisargika Karaka is actually an EXPERIENCING faculty of the mind i.e. one aspect of the mind. Merging with this the fact that we are looking at the Karaka in Rasi, then it furthermore implies that Bhaava from Karaka must actually be how that particular faculty of mind experiences that part of the native’s approach to physical existence. So 7th from Venus in Rasi would be how the desires/senses/passion part of the mind of the native experiences relationships at the level of his daily physical existence. My question is: Am I thinking on the right track? If so, how far can we extend this meaning of Karakas - do Naisargika karakas carry the same “experiential” meaning in other charts as well? Only for D-1 to D-12 or even higher?

    Thank you very much.

    Sundeep

The time span puts the ascendant/ lagna is either taurus or Gemini. There are 4 planets (Sun/Ve/Ma/Mer) in Gemini.

    1. You are definitely on the right track.
    2. Very good thinking. Now expand this understanding to the theory of the five levels of consciousness of (1) physical, (2) mental, (3) subconscious, (4) Supraconsciousness and (5) Super consciousness.
Beyond the second level, our perception ends and the karmas begin in a major way.
